Ok, down to 2 cars. Help me pick. 18 order vs. 17

I'll get to the point

This is a DD for me
Prob have the car 1.5 to 2 years (I go through cars quick)
Resale is important, since I dont keep a long time
I plan to add MPE plus M Performance steering wheel to whatever I buy
Drive about 5k miles per year, even as a DD.
I'm stuck on MG for color. Which stinks, only 2 in the entire country on dealers lots right now. I wish I would go with a diff color this would be much easier!!

Car 1: 17 Used
$51,500
2017 Exec Pack
M Performance Exhaust
4500 miles
1 owner, service records
I get it next week

Car 2: New build, 6 weeks out (in week 1)
$59, 350 MSRP
$57, 345 but I'm getting $1k more for my trade so the net is $56,345
Options: Exec, Apple, Sunroof
4 hour drive away

Car 3: On dealer lot, 18 new
$57,340 MSRP
$55340 PP, dealer wont budge under MSRP or increase my trade
Options: Exec, grilles, apple
10 hours each way, but can get it now

My thoughts -

I think #3 is out. The reason I really want a sunroof, so if I'm going new I may as well wait a month and get what I want.

I am very worried about my trade in value in 6 weeks. I'm worried the dealer will "bait and switch". Its an out of state transaction. So for #2 that extra 1 to 2k I think I"m getting in the trade may disappear.

I found out the 17 has MPE which is something I planned on buying. So that is sure a bonus. I could even take it off when I go to sell, and I would net about $1200 cash for it (by the time I buy a used stock exhaust, pay install, then shipping).

The Exec pack doesnt do much for me, as I will be swapping the wheel so heating doesnt mean anything. Dont use WIFI.

If you're only going to have it 1-2 years? Might as well get the used one, unless you just have to have the sunroof. If you were going to keep it longer I would say get what you really want, but you won't regret not getting it exactly as you want because 2 years from now the M2 will be ancient history for you.

Yeah, my last couple of cars lasted under a year... lol. I feel getting the used one would limit my "loss". This isnt a long term keeper car for me, but a fun DD i can put some miles on.

I guess the other factor is the MPE. I'm looking at $2900 or so shipped. Looks like they're selling for $1400 used plus shipping.

So I could deduct that cost from my 17 used. $1500 I dont have to spend, or I could try to sell it and pocket about $1k down the road.
And I could actually ADD that cost to the 18 plus installation. About $1500 (after selling). Which makes the spread a bit larger.

The immediate "mods" are MPE, M Perf Steering wheel, and black grilles. That's about it.

I guess I am confused; my 1M came with an M Steering wheel, as did my 135is Convertible. Are you saying that the steering wheel that comes with the M2 is some sort of inferior shit to that? I test drove an M2 and I didn't think there was anything wrong with the stock M2 wheel, and I did dislike the wheel on my stock 135i Coupe (now traded in) enough that I put an M wheel on it for $600+.

Personally speaking, there is no way that I would put expensive mods on a car like an M2, that I had no intention of keeping long term. You won't get squat back on them later, and if those changes are so important to you for a car you are only going to own for such a short time, I'd say you don't really like the M2 that much, so buy something else, like a Cayman S.

Nothing wrong with the stock M wheel. But I like the alcantara / leather thicker one better. I buy it, use it, then "part out" when I sell. This way I only pay the difference.

I'd opt for the used one with MPE, especially if you're not keeping it for long. 4500-1200 mile break-in is hardly "used" in the conventional manner. Maintenance package (if not included from dealer) won't be a big loss to you given the 1-2 year ownership. You'd probably sell it before the brakes are even due.

Main points are really just whether the LCI changes are worth the price difference for you.

Lastly, I'm also a big fan of the m performance wheel, definitely feels better than stock.

If you want the MPE, the 17 is the way to go. I LOVE having a sunroof for the light it adds to the interior, but/and, I never missed it in my M2 - the interior is lighter already (maybe because Dakota is a light black?)

And you will take a hit on a new 18 in 1-2 years. Heck, the 17 will take a hit.

VERY surprised about what you say about the MG color - I can have my dealer check, but so many dealers have incoming unsold M2s right now, I am surprised that you have to wait 6 weeks.

Going to PM you on trade value...

There are 41 new and used M2s of varying colors and transmissions within 500 miles of me in Kansas City per cars.com. What am I missing here?

Some of them, especially the new ones, are already sold (i.e. usually pre-ordered) but they get listed anyway, as many dealers put all of their incoming/new vehicles up on car sites even if the car is already spoken for. A lot of the used ones are going up at prices that won't produce a sale, so they can sit there for quite a while.

7 of 10 M2's I called on were "sold", " a customers car", or "an allocation that will be coming up soon". Wasted a ton of my time. It was like calling GMC dealers. One dealer had a 18 brand new listed for $50k! I knew it was a waste of time but called anyways... of course "that one sold but can I help you order a new one?".

Oh, and some of the below MSRP prices included incentives that most people will not qualify for.

They do it to get you to call them, then hook you into a deal.

I only wanted a MG + manual. So really limited my choices. I wish I was more open to color choices.

Placed a deposit on the 17 w MPE today. Was able to negotiate another $1k off plus a full detail (polish, etc).

I didnt want to deal with being worried about my trade in value 6 weeks from now. Plus about $51k plus max trade value, in the color combo I wanted.

I sure hope I like the MPE! I'm banking it will make it worthwhile.

I've had MPE on a couple other M's, always a nice balance.

I had my dealer check today on MGs with stick... One 2018 available (east coast I believe)

There are going to be plenty in the next month or two, but today, that is not the case.

Yup, there are only 2 manual MG 18's on the ground. BMW Townson. Nice guys there, but they were low on my trade and nothing off MSRP. Plus 25 hour road trip.

If I was open to any color would have had many more to pick from.

Black looks fantastic, but a PIA as a DD.
White is white
Blue looks nice but not for me

MG shows the hips as has a chunky, race car look to it with all the black trim. Had it on my F80 M3 and really liked it.

MG looks a lot better on the M2 than the M3 I think! Looks so good!

@Tag wants MG .. but is also planning to wait.

XutvJet rookie mistake trusting cars.com and/or autotrader ads. Need to hit the phones and check actual inventory if you are looking for an M2 , a cayman GT4, etc.

BMW Allocations roll out to different markets at different times so some regions have more vehicles than others depending on when you are looking.
