Am I just unlucky?
My cats were replaced few months ago because it stopped working properly. Today, I had a continuous grinding/screeching sound coming from the passenger rear wheel during this morning's commute. Took it in and dealer said it's a busted wheel bearing. I haven't even hit 5000 miles yet. Am I cursed or has anyone else been making a lot of trips to the mechanic?

If it's repaired for free/under warranty you aren't cursed, you're blessed

6,000 miles in 14 months and not a single problem for me, other than the soda can crunch noise that was solved by the re-designed backing plates. I think you're just in a bad streak of luck. The kinks will get ironed out and it'll end up being a reliable car for you.

I recall there were others here that were told the noise was a bad wheel bearing only to later find out if was a rock stuck in their backing plate. Ask the dealer how they know for sure it's the bearing. You said this happened this morning, I highly doubt they had time to take the hub out and inspect the bearing. Friday's are always crazy busy and I won't be surprised if they are just guessing it's the bearing until they can really look into it.

15,000 miles and the only thing I have had is the brake shields replaced with newer part so rocks don't get caught in it making noise (maybe this is your real problem????) and the rear tail light had some condensation.

^ Agreed. I'm also willing to bet it was a stone in the brake area and they wrote it off as a wheel bearing replacement.

I've watched a lot of Nick Murray videos. One of his tips when he had his M4 was slightly bending out the brake shields away from the Rotor. The slightly opened gap doesn't allow rocks to get wedged between the inside part of rotor and shield and frees up rocks that may be stuck there. It's the first issue he talks about.

Now that you guys mentioned it, I didn't noticed the wheels off when I went to get my stuff to put into the rental. I'll let my SA know about the brake shields and see what happens.

If you search soda can crunch noise on the forum you should find the part number for the updated brake shield, but I would think MY18 would have them, shrug.

The new part doesn't stop pebbles from getting into the brake region and sticking to something or getting wedged somewhere, what is does is it allows them to eventually fall out once they break loose, as opposed to being trapped in their forever. Both times it's happened to me the stones fell out within 5 min, but holy crap did it make an insane amount of noise while they were stuck in there. It was like nails on a chalk board. I think a pebble somehow got wedged in between the pad and the rotor: I ended up replacing it and fortunately it hasn't happened again Last edited by AndrewC1989; 02-17-2018 at 09:16 PM.. |

I have a MY 17 (August 2016 build).
After hearing the 'rocks in a soda can' (more noticeable in the summer with the windows open), I mentioned there were updated dust shields to my BMW service adviser who checked and had them replaced no charge. They had also replaced them recently on an M3/M4. |

They actually added the m2 to the official tsb covering the m3/m4 shields mid last year. All you have to do is reference it to be dealer and they should be able to get them ordered w/o any kind of diagnostic time.
