I did some research when I got my X1 and saw it on the spec sheet.
I think the no charge Active Guard, is the devise that pops the back of the bonnet up in the event of a collision - it is meant to minimise pedestrian injuries. Apparently on some other makes of car, similar devices can be set off (expensively!) by hitting a speed bump too hard. I could be wrong..........

BMW genius dude said
Active Guard, comprises:
Forward vehicle collision warning with audible and visual warning given to the driver
Over 30mph an urgent warning also activates brake preconditioning to prepare brakes ahead of driver use
City collision mitigation proactively engages braking for rapid reaction to potential vehicle collisions
City collision mitigation works at speeds up to 30mph

I think the feature you're referring to is actually listed as:

8TF - Active Protection For Pedestrians

Active Guard is the camera-based collision warning/mitigation system.

I did some more googling and i think I have it, it doesn’t automatically break but if you even breath on the pedal it goes full breaking effort. The car will basically do an emergency stop but you have to tell it too by touching the break pedal

Collision warning with city braking function is standard on F48

F48 Driver Assistance Systems

4. Camera-based Collision Warning

The collision warning warns the driver of a possible risk of collision and is recognized in the F48 using the KAFAS system.

The camera-based collision warning includes the following functions:
• Collision warning with city braking function
• Pedestrian warning with city braking function

The collision warning with city braking function is already included in the standard equipment of the F48.

The pedestrian warning with city braking function is an element of the optional equipment Driving Assistant (SA 5AS).

The system can warn the driver in situations where a collision is imminent. The early warning, a visual signal, is issued first to draw the driver's attention to the situation. If the situation becomes more critical, an acute warning in the form of a visual and acoustic signal is issued. The nature of the warning is such that the driver can still prevent a collision providing he acts quickly. If there is no reaction from the driver after an acute warning, the driver is supported with automatic braking of the vehicle (5-85 km/h).

This is what training manual tells.

Regards,
Marcel
