The magic of the automatic gearbox

I am I right in thinking the automatic gearbox uses information from the sat nav, to make sure the car is in the optimal gear

No, ConnectedShift is only available in 5 and 7 series so far I think.

I recall seeing information to this effect when I was buying my X1. Can't say that I have ever noticed anything - but how would you. I have driven and owned many automatics over the years and this is by far the best.

"In SPORT and COMFORT modes, the characteristics of ConnectedShift are adapted to the respective driving program, in ECO PRO mode ConnectedShift is not available. ConnectedShift is also not available during control operation of cruise control.
ConnectedShift is used in the F48, depending on the equipment, specifically in vehicles with gas engine, automatic transmission and navigation system.
A prerequisite is that the map data and the required additional information for the country are available. This is dependent on the navigation map provider and is not available worldwide for all countries."

The source of this information is the technical training documentation, viz: http://f48.bimmerpost.com/forums/att...0&d=1443221524

FWIW, my sense is that ConnectedDrive in the F48 is somewhat less advanced than that implemented in the latest 5 and 7 series.

Predictive shifting. For example, the car could shift down if it is approaching a sharp turn.

Any automatic gearbox has a "mind of its own". This just a bit more intelligent, presumably.
