USB Flash drive problem?
After taking delivery of my car in July 2016, following some recommendations here I copied my music to a micro USB stick, namely a SanDisk 64GB Ultra Fit CZ43 USB 3.0 USB 130MB/s Flash Drive. Since then I've only added a few tracks and no issues until a couple of months ago.
Music would stop mid track, with "No external drive found" or similar on the HUD. Pressing the "Mode" button on the steering wheel to cycle to the radio then back to the USB drive would cause the music to resume, and working fine for a number of tracks then again the problem. It's not confined to any particular tracks, nor ambient temperature inside the car. I use a short high quality USB extension cable between the stick and the socket in the armrest. I know these micro USB sticks get hot, so thinking maybe after a year and a half this one might have seen it's days, I copied the music from it's original source on my PC to a new identical stick, purchased when I bought the first and unused since. However the problem has reoccurred with it too. Anyone had similar strife? |

I've had problems with 64Gb USBs and I suspect it is because the iDrive system has problems indexing anything that big. When I switched to smaller (32Gb or smaller USB drives) my problems disappeared

Actually I just reviewed what I bought at the time.
The initial one in the car was 32GB. The one now is 16GB. Both Sandisk Ultra Fit types. |

I'll try a full size stick, a 32GB Kingston Datatraveler 100 G3, which supposedly has faster read & write speeds than the Sandisk Ultrafit, though the speed depends on what the iDrive can do I guess.
The Datatraveler might run a bit cooler, if that was the problem. |
