Would BMW regas ac under warranty?

My F31 is 2 years and 2 days old. As the weather has finally turned the ac is now required for more than demisting.
But it’s really not very cold.

Would/should BMW regas under warranty as it’s just 2 years old?? Or is a regas considered a wear and tear type item?

I bought an AUC 123d a good few years back and it needed regassing, and a couple of new hoses, which they did under warranty.

It's a sealed system.... so if it's leaked out it should be warranty. Unless it's stone damage to the condenser.

Isn’t it meant to be re-gassed every 2 years though?

Technically... no. It's a sealed system with a liquid line filter drier. So barring any leaks should never need 'topping up' .The compressor shaft seal is lubricated by oil so with constant use the seal should always seal. Quite often a.c. is not used over winter and thus the seal can dry out and refrigerant can pass by. Hence why your a.c. system should be used 30 mins every week. 👌

When dealer ''re gas" your a.c. they actually suckout the old refrigerant and most often... 're use it. It's drawn out through a filter drier that is suppose to remove moisture etc..... but in my experience ( 20 year motor trade from senior tech to group service manager, and now service director of a refrigeration company) this filter is as old as the machine and next to useless. Very few technicians in dealers actually understand the thermodynamics involved with a.c. or refrigeration... and rely on a machine that does it for them. IMO of course 👌

I believe the 2 year a.c. service is a money spinning oppptunity thought up by dealers. As they never change the drier during the service so what's the point 😉 IMO again

I know they say 2 years for a re-gas but as someone said it’s a bit of a money spinner and 2 yrs use on a brand new car isn’t much.

Possible something else...

When a.c. is used. It will draw moisture out of the air. This condensates in the heater box and will drop out under the car. But it stays a bit moist in the heater box, and you then get bacteria etc forming and this is the smell. You can now get dedicated a.c. system deoourises that do work. The wurth one is very good. It's a little can that you fire off inside the car with it on re-circ and it kills bacteria.

The simplest way is run A/C all the time. Besides the benefits of A/C, no issues with smells and oddities with condensation.

Better not to get bacterial growth in the HVAC system, than have to deal with it.

The A/C in my 320d stopped working at just under 2 years. They replaced the compressor under warranty and all was well until I hit the Max A/C button this week, and all it would blow out was warm air. Spoke to the dealer and the fitted part is under warranty for two years. It was fitted 20 months ago. If its not the compressor its £90 for a diagnostic check, and as the car is now out of warranty, the cost of a repair. I'm not particularly impressed with BMW air conditioning. I leave the Air Con on all through winter, but I guess this may not work the system properly unless its blowing out cool air. Never had any Air Con problems with my Mercedes C Class which was 8 years old before I got rid, and operated the Air Con in exactly the same way.
