Just updated NA Route map to 2018-2 via usb successfully. Vendor told me no need to get FSC key bc our cars for Route map version comes with lifetime FSC. Being skeptical i just purchased the map only and proceeded to update and it worked. So FYI no need to purchase FSC key, only map data, saving you folks unnecessary purchase for key.
Also took 45 minutes to update and got map from ebay vendor at $15 (bimmer_coding). At least he was honest about not needing to buy key.

BMW service center will do this update as long as the vehicle is under warranty for free. Just had mine updated. Or you can recieve updates thru the Connecteddrive website. The update is automatically sent to the car.

You were lucky and fortunate. Not all dealers will update for free and my understanding connected drive over the air does not work here in U.S.

The pre-touchscreen idrive F48's can't get map updates OTA since they are 3G cellular modems

I have yet to figure out how to get the maps from the website like those in europe say that they can.

I went to the dealership about updates and got a huge run around, service said talk to parts, parts said to talk to service. I finally gave up on having BMW dealership help me with the maps for now, I may have to try again though.

Yeah, unfortunately the BMW dealer we used excels at doing the runaround like this as well.
