Run Flats: Must you replace in pairs?
Hit a pothole & have a bubble in my right front tire sidewall. Tires have around 10K miles - is it best to replace the pair? If I just replace the damaged one, what effect will that have on driving/handling? The tire dealer is telling me they should only be replaced in pairs with this much mileage - what do you guys think?
Thanks in advance for your replies... |

Realistically you should always replace in pairs. Measure the tread and see what the difference would be to a new one. ABS and other things use wheel speed so if it's far off it may cause problems. The rear (or in a AWD) is more important than fronts because different size tires will work the diff more.

How close in mileage or wear do you need to keep them? I bought a full size spare and matching rim and want to be able to keep all the tires within the tolerance by rotating them.

yeah that $500-800 road hazard warranty for 5 years pays for itself. imagine 4 new tires a year.

the Paragon - Auto Club plan at $28 per year is a much better deal although it is limited to $700 per occurrence ($350 for tire and $350 for the and a max of $1,400 per year - but it is much cheaper.

yeah but you might get 4 flats at once every 11 days and the more expensive plan would work out as a better deal.

I wonder if people with the tire insurance plan 'accidentally' run over nails and such when treadwear is getting lower.
Then, oops... one week later, another nail in another tire... I would just tell people I go to home depot regularly... but no tire insurance for me... |
