Is the touch different to the classic? I have an Ipod Classic 80gb connected via the USB, using the standard white lead that came with the ipod and it works perfectly. No aux-in required.

For me standart Ipod cable does not work.
I had to buy a special Ipod cable at BMW witch have connection to Ipod and exit to USB and 3.5 aux. Works great!

You can leave it plugged. Ipod will turnoff itself, no battery leak.

The option you ordered calls "USB/Ipod connection". This mean you have USB slot in car and IPOD Most mounted (something about 400$ if you buy it separate). With car you have a little USB H/M cable to use it with pen drives.
But the cable for IPOD you should buy separate at BMW shop, price is arond 65€ here in Spain, I don't know whats price is in USA.

Guys this is mad. Both my early ipod 60gb, my iPod classic 80gb and my 8gb nano work with just the standard white ipod cable that comes with the ipod. No aux in required. If its taking audio from the aux, the sound quality is going to be seriously affected.

Does anyone know what the story is here?

i was thinking the exact same thing. i do not think that you have to plug it in with both. it is one or the other. if you use aux you obviously won't have control of the ipod through idrive. i think you guys are doing it wrong if you connect it to both.

The 6FL option requires the datacable form BMW which uses the USB port and AUX. The USB allows the iPod to go into UART mode for data transfer and the AUX line carries the audio signal. Since the audio signal is drawn from the dock connector, it is low level and perfectly fine. You do not want your audio source coming from the headphone jack as this typically will sound flat/distorted.

For those that did not get the 6FL option when ordering can use a simple dock cable to 3.5mm cable or for a more integrated solution - the mObridge iPod integration kit.

For those that have not ordered their M3 yet - choose the 6FL option. the over the counter BMW kit is much different, albeit much slower with limitations.

Tom

I don't know if you guys in the states get different connectors to us, but if you don't this is plain incorrect. Here in Europe the option is called "USB Audio Interface" which provides a USB connector under the armrest alongside the aux-in port. I also got a BMW lead with the kit which looked like some sort of USB extension cable. However I didn't need to use it nor purchase the other BMW lead with both aux & usb connector. All my ipods are working perfectly without using the BMW lead, connected via the standard ipod usb/dock cable that comes free when you buy the ipod. Both the ipod control, library and sound are all transmitted over that cable.

I would be grateful if someone could clarify because I hate to see people spend money unnecessarily.

Mick,

Check your contract and see if you order "USB Audio Interface" is called "6FL" as it is here in the states.
