Going matte on my Donnington Grey

Not done yet but this is gonna be super slick.

Xpel stealth is on national backorder. This film is Suntek Ultra Matte. All the black trim and carbon accents are staying gloss.

My car - also Donnington - has been in 3 wks doing the same. Shop didn't have XPEL Stealth on hand so he's using the Llumar matte product. Let's see how it turns out...

To you guys wrapping it matte -- what's the maintenance like on this compared to the matte paint? Can you wash and wax it like normal over the matte wrap? Interested to hear more...

The matte wrap is significantly easier to care for than matte paint. The matte paint will retain discoloration from bug splatter, bird droppings etc much more than matte wrap. Also, scratches in the matte paint are much harder to buff out or correct. I wouldn't buy a car with matte paint unless I was wrapping it. With that said, the matte wrap will also require at least two coats of ceramic to make it easier to clean. Also with the matte wrap on a gloss paint such as Donington Grey, the installer has to wrap the edges all the way around because if you cut it short, you will have a gloss edge such as on the doors or seams. Obviously unsightly. I have been an Audi guy previously and once I bought the M5 I noticed just how many BMWs are on the road, specifically with nice shiny gloss paint. I am going matte to make the car look more aggressive and unique rather than blending in with every other 5 and 7 Series out there.

Interesting and great info! So applying a ceramic coating on top of the matte wrap won't make it shiny? Do you still wax it like normal?

This is the same route I was thinking of going!

Is there a specific ceramic coat you'd recommend along with the XPEL Stealth?

The Suntek ultra matte has a ceramic hydrophobic coating built in. No need to ceramic coat afterwards.

Ceramic Pro is the coating of choice on matte wrap. It won't make the matte look glossy. It just adds hydrophobic properties for easier upkeep.

Good example here: https://youtu.be/l67Gi7TLUYs

Wash/wax as normal. In fact, on Ceramic Pro, quick detailer is just as good as wax without as much risk of discoloration. I like Kenotec Showroom Shine for this purpose.

This will look amazing. Matte greys and silvers work best rather than bold colors IMO.

That's perfect, thank you

Though, you wouldn't want to wax on a matte coating, no?

The risk is waxing off some of the protective coating that you already have. This is why quick detailer is preferred on the wrap.

Had the same problem. It's because of file size. Make your pics smaller (I resized to *** x 1300 and kept aspect ratio in PAINT app). It will work.

That’s exactly why I did it. Really wanted to cheapen it up.

Looks awesome, I would do this when I get mine but I just can’t stomach the cost on a lease car! Looks great!
