161 on 330i

Anyone knows if style 161 will fit on a 330i, I know the offset is good. Since 330i have bigger brakes, would the 161 clear the brakes??

Any OEM 17" wheel should fit. After all, 330s come standard with 17" wheels.

They fit fine. The 161 is an optional setup for the 330 in many other countries than the US.

Just an FYI - I had style 159 17" on stock 330i non-sport, and I ended up wasting money on 18" aftermarket rims that did not clear the caliper well, and finally went with style 162 18".

The inside of the stock 17" rims on the 330i curves in, which allows them to clear the huge rotors. Most aftermarket 17" will not clear, and some 18" are also suspect. I bought 18" ACE Klassik that cleared for 0.5mm on one half and grooved in the other half. So, I am gonna have to sell them for a loss. Before you commit to buying new wheels, see if someone else has them on the exact setup and ask for pictures on much the rim will clear the caliper.

There is a good chance the 161 will clear since they are from BMW. However, they are designed for 325 with smaller rotors, so if you want to be sure, you better check.

The other reason, and sorry for talking too much, is that some manufacturers will say anything to sell the rim, and a 0.5 mm clearance is okay with them -- but that's damn too close, and it good chance it will rub some inside part of the rim. I paid for this experience with the 18" ACE and the space save spare rim I purchased from BAV AUTO.

Why not just read my post?
The 161 is not designed "for" the 325 (which indeed does have smaller rotors than the 330). It is just "paired" with the 325 in North America. But, contrary to the belief of some, the US is not the navel of the world. The 161 wheel is offered for the 330 as an option in many other parts of the world including its true home, Bavaria, Germany.

So yes, the 161 wheel (combo actually since it´s usually a staggered setup) DOES DEFINITELY fit the 330 and its bigger rotors.
If you still don´t believe me I´ll have to go out on the streets and find you a 330 with the 161 wheels and take some pictures. They are apletny around here (not because the 161 is so popular, it´s not, but because there are so many E90s around here)

There you go, rant is over....

Dear Tierfreund,

Did you spend 800 dollars and wait two weeks for rims that the manufacturer says it fits only to find out it clears for 0.5mm and scratches? Did you spend 180 dollars for a spare saver rim from BAVAUTO, supposedly a very reputable BMW parts sellers, when they put in writing the rim will fit only to find out it won't even go on the hub? Perhaps not! I am tired of wasting money, and so much time on top of that just to pay for other people's icompetence.

I am only giving the word or caution to our fellow BMW owner. I didn't say 161 won't fit for sure, I say see if someone else has it and ask for a picture to make sure you are okay with the fit and clearance, since they are not common here in the US.

And since you are so kind to offer pictures (and there are tons of 330i with 161 over there), please take a few pictures of them and post it here so that our dear friend here, Kes, can be sure.

best regards,

Hornet,

Thanks for the pictures. As they say, picture is worth the 1000 words. It gives assurance to me and likes of me.

Just curious, what does the "A" in "330iA" stands for? Automatic?
We don't get that designation here.

Whoa, easy there. Never meant to step on your toes. I never said there are tons of 330s with 161, only that there are tons of E90. And that the 161 is available from factory for the 330. Which our fellow friend from Finnland was kind enough to prove.

You don´t know me, but I´m not your usual bullshitter. That´s why I get angry when I get ignored because when I post something, I´m either damn sure about it, or I´ll prefix it with "I believe", "I think" or "Someone told me that".
When I say the 161 fits on the 330 without any further contraint, I´m absolutely positive. In this case not only from knowing the 161 is in the E90 catalogue for the 330, but also from seeing at least two 330s upclose with the 161 setup.

I´m sorry to hear about your troubles, but that just goes to show, that in the auto business, reputable doesn´t mean much.

I´m not in the auto business though.

The A is not an official (BMW) designation for "Automatic". But in dealer circles it´s not unusual to attach it for short reference of "Auto" versions.
Mostly used on BMW´s, very rarely on other brands.

The only official Version I know of is with Ferrari (when they still had conventional Autos). I.E. 412iA, 465GTA etc.

Your point is taken - I do read all the posts and wasn't out there to prove you wrong - my emphasis was on the point that I have found the e90 wheels to be a bit of a tricky matter, and maybe a bit more caution than average is needed so that you don't end up with a set of unusable wheels.

Cheers,

Cheers,

All right, you we´re right in posting a cautionary warning after your personal experience. Allways better to doublecheck. I guess we can now consider the 161 on 330 combo doublechecked!
Cheers
