Lightbulb Engine Temperature: What is normal?

Hello guys,

I have a 530i with less than 1000miles on it, after a 20min drive this morning in LA I noticed the dash engine temp gauge moves above the center a little bit, this is my first turbo engine car - it appears to me that this might be a little on the high side compared to other cars I have owned. Is this normal?

I wouldn't worry much about it -- if anything was outside the norms, you'd get an iDrive notification.. but I would say it's safe to assume that the middle is the normal operating temp, subject to small fluctuations based on driving conditions and exterior temp. The car will adjust cooling parameters as needed to keep it at the optimal temp for fuel efficiency.

How do you check engine temp on a 530e?

Mine is the same.

Relax you are fine. Stop finding faults with your new car. Go take a drive and enjoy

Thanks for the info. had a cold low key LS460 for 4 yrs. I guess I'll have to get used to with the hot ride.

Pretty sure the gauges on the e are different.. soo I have no idea. But same logic applies; it’s 2018 — if there’s a problem, you can bet your rear end the car won’t hide it from you!

BMW engines are highly efficient and thus run at a higher temperature than older vehicles. But higher does not mean more dangerous or anything to worry about.

If you really are curious about the oil temperature as well as coolant you could try getting the information from the hidden cluster menu. Don't know if this method works on a 530e but worth a try.

no. they run hotter on purpose for emissions and fuel economy purposes. BMW engines, especially the inline 6's are efficient due to their design, and the transmission tuning/gearing also helps. they do not run hot because they are efficient, it's the other way around.

they run very hot. designed to run practically just below overheating temps to be as efficient as possible which is certainly not good for the engine and does not help performance wise.

coolant temperature gauges, especially with no indication as to what temperature the ticks mean is practically useless. as long as your water pump doesnt explode and causes the temp to go into the red zone, don't worry about it. shame they got rid of the oil temp gauge like in past models.
