Well, we have pretty much settled in thanks be to God for our new home!
I have a huge affinity for flowers. Got that from my Grandma who I remember working in her garden and pulling weeds, watering etc. The colors, smells, are very calming and just beautiful to look at. I new exactly what I wanted to do here and one of the first things after the house was built, was to build a stone retaining wall for our garden. But I had to wait for late Spring to actually plant the flowers I really wanted. They have grown very nicely over the last month and add so much character and curb appeal to the front yard.

Same here! I spend some serious coin just this year on a riding mower, aerator, spreader, Bio Stimulant package (The Lawn Care Nut), fertilizer and god knows how much on maple trees, blue spruces, norways spruces and every Hydrangeas you can think of I love my lawn! oh, just made my own striping kit!

^^ Nice man! I can't cut my own grass due to my severe allergies. But I fertilize, water, pull weeds and keep it lush and green AF!

Having only ever lived in a 4 season climate, I've got to ask . .. how long will those annuals live there?

For us, most of those plants will live from Mother's day (the north east rule of thumb to be frost safe) and start looking sad around the end of September/October . Do they last longer in Texas?

i would think the heat in Texas would cook them? for me I never planted annuals as it seemed to me like planting cash in the ground for a few months than pulling them out and tossing them in the trash later always planted perrenials. those annuals do look nice as i may have to try it one year and see how it all pans out

BTW TXSTYLE is that the only flower bed you have or do you have more around back? edit: never mind...I remember you have that AWESOME custom BBQ grill back there

So regarding the annuals... Yes, if you want the vibrant colors from Vinca, Celosia, etc like this, a hard freeze will take them out. So I can count on these lasting a good: 8 months+. Which for me is worth the investment of a couple hundred dollars for the beauty. These will tolerate triple digits too! My garden has built in soaker hoses under the mulch.

I do have a few flowers, but when I think of "garden" I think of fresh food. Those calabacitas and nopales we had with the burgers I "BBQ'd" last night were SOOO good. Literally less than an hour from garden to my belly!!!

As far as grass, I live in Cali and we are in a drought ;( I went over to my dad's yesterday, dressed in new sneakers and a casual Hawaiian shirt. When I rolled up his lawn is all overgrown since he's a little under the weather this past 10 days. Welp, guess I'm mowing his lawn. . .

We have a ton of perennials but always mix in annuals since annuals will steadily bloom during the season. With just perennials, there were always a few periods where our gardens were just too "green" with not enough color. The $200/year we spend on a few flats of annuals is well worth it.

Absolutely! I actually do the same. I planted some Lantana mixed in there which will come back in the Spring. I also planted a yellow and pink Hibiscus (love these) tons of buds, just waiting for them to bloom...

And just to the other side of our front entrance on the left, I planted this Hibiscus back in Spring. It was tiny and is now blooming great!
I really love this flower as it reminds me of a Tropical getaway.

Must be getting close to being done, if it's being starved of light to change the color, won't increase potency though. For a good final swell, it's always best to cut a 45 degree notch out of the bottom of the stalk not quite halfway through and about 1" up, 24-36 hours before harvest. It makes the plant think that an animal is chewing on it and will start the defense mechanism which will increase yield and terpenes......but what do I know?

Nice work on your garden. I'm trying to decide what to do for my landscaping in front of my house. I've decided on some hostas and already have some hen and chicks planted but I feel like I need some color. My only issue is that I want low maintenance. Perennials are the way I want to go. I also have a topography issue to contend with; I'll probably have to put a drain in my flower garden as every time it rains it washes dirt onto my sidewalk.

Thanks! Perennials are the way to go if you don't want to replant each year. I love the vibrant colors of annuals! But I also had to go with rabbit resistant flowers for the ones that escape my pellet gun. Lol!

A valid point I'm glad that you touch on. There are a ton of rabbits running around my place. The cat keeps most small critters population down, but there are always rabbits lurking.

Lantana are gorgeous and come back! Also Vinca and Celosia are wonderful options that I planted.
