First track day

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Took the M5 with 2000 miles on the clock to Laguna Seca.
Some video following my friend in his M3 (he is better in the corners than I)
Best lap time was 1:49, hit 130mph once (scary as shit due to corner 1 crest) from corner 11 to 2.

Car was awesome, period.

Gas mileage, 5.8 mpg, yes five point eight. Used 23 gallons in 6 hours save the environment.

I do have a check engine light that needs some attention but can’t figure out what it is upset about, no issues on the console messages and no issues driving, probably triggered an emissions check due to fuel burn

Tires hit 194 degrees F under heavy cornering.

This was my first track day (of many i hope).

Car is completely stock, steel brakes.

Brakes did soften a bit when super hot, funny thing is that they actually feel smoother after the track day in normal driving as a result, they tended to be a bit grabby before this.

Driving in MDM mode with sports plus on everything except steering.

I was in the novice group, faster (and heavier and longer) than anything else on the track, M3s were a better in the corners but chewed them up on the straights.

Enormous fun, tail slides, full four wheel slides, super fun, strongly recommend this activity in an M5.

The tires kindof fucked, i think I’ve took off half the tread in 6 hours.

I have full clear bra on the car, would recommend as it makes it much easier to clean after a track day.

Sounds like an awesome day ! You burnished the brakes which contributed to the smoothness. How were the coolant temps ?

Yes, very awesome day.

Coolant hit 220F. Used RaceChrono Pro and and an OBDII reader to record all the stats from the car, great app for $20.

Funny thing about the brakes, they now squeal a little when breaking in reverse gear, not something I’ll loose sleep over

So the car is so helpful with the little messages.

Parked up after the session with the hood open to let it all cool and this message pops up, like no shit, of course the engine is hot I’ve just flogged it around a track for 20mins, the BMW engineers really know how to have a laugh

That’s better than my sold Z06.

Will that app read the code that was set ?

Great video. Where and how did you have the camera mounted?

As for feedback, it looks like you are turning in too early on multiple occasions (a common thing for newer drivers on the track).

Now that you have the track bug, it sticks with you for a long time. Enjoy!

Awesome. Thanks for sharing. Sounds like you were not an F10 M5 owner previously. As the F10 will also give you that warning message. And don't worry about track driving technique and critiques from others on a forum. There's a lot of people willing to dish out critiques who can't take it themselves. But with more experience I have no doubt that you can chew up M3's in the corners with that ///MxDrive System. I hope you get to go again soon. Track driving is a lot of fun for sure! Oh also any black flags for noise restrictions on the F90? I also imagine the new M5 Competition is going to be a notch more exciting on the track too.

Z06 needs every sort of tranny and powertrain cooler available in the aftermarket.

Laguna Seca with an M5... you're living the dream!

Question-- is that bluestone metallic or silverstone you went with?

Are there any reviews/videos of an M5 vs. an M3? Haven't seen any comparisons on a track (and obviously the M3 doesn't have a shot in a straight line).

Not yet. But the F10 M5 had no problem outpacing an E92 M3 on track in the hands of equally skilled drivers. I have no doubt that an F90 M5 can out-corner an F80 M3 with its AWD system, especially a Competition F90 with better springs and handling characteristics.

Thanks! Yeah was just wondering as I didn't own the F10, this is my first M5.

A couple of M3s have pulled up next to me and raced on the highway/at red lights though.

Cool, thanks for sharing the video.

As you get even faster the tires and brake pads will become the limitation. Invest in a set of track wheels and tires, and a set of race pads. Your daily driving will thank me.

You got some decent lines for a first timer! Looks super fun man! Enjoy the M5! Looks like a blast! Make sure you also don't put on the emergency/ Parking brakes on. It'll warp the rotors if it's still smoking hot.

But you'll never be able to do this in an M5

Maybe on big tracks? Not at peasant level local tracks narrow and tight where weight matters vs power.
