I got a free afe intake, but wonder if there is any bad cons....

I didn't read it here, but I have read some places that intakes can damage engines over time. I have even read since k&n air filters being less restrictive allow more particulate matter to get into the engine. Will it cause the engine to run too lean?

If it is like their other BMW applications. It isn't sealed and sucks in hot air. Not a big fan.

My buddy has the AFE in his 545i, it isn't sealed, he just likes the sound. It just has this aluminum cover. Drive your car for an hour let the engine bay heat up, then dyno it. I bet you will lose power, HEAT SOAK.

yeah, the intake is more of a "cool sound" type of deal, i mean your going froma closed box that generally keeps the air fairly cool to a freaking aluminum cover that gets hot as "F" if you touch it. so yeah, but if you have a vented hood like me and are getting the rpi scoop like me its a lil offset by it, but overall if its free and want a cool sound to go along with the exaust, yeah, put it in!

This is why I don't like it, AFE on a 545i. Heat soak. If you want if just for sound, go for it.

Aluminum is such a great idea for a heat shroud!!
It's such a great conductor of heat, no wonder they use it on CPU heatsinks!!

Yeeesh, get a Dinan and dump the AFE crap.
It costs less by comparison...

... but then again, its hard to beat free...
