How to remove M3 trunk lip spoiler correctly?

Ok folks, I purchased a CF M3 lip spoiler for my trunk lid.

The question is how do you suggest I remove my OEM M3 spoiler? And when I do, how do I remove the remaining residue on my trunk?

Thank you for you suggestions and tips. I will post pictures during the process. I estimate my lip spoiler should be arriving sometime this week.

It’s been a few years but what worked well with my E46, as I recall, was slowly working fishing line between the spoiler and the trunk lid to separate them and then Goo-Gone to remove the residue of the 3M double-sided tape.

This could work...some people use dental floss, but that might not be strong enough. Also would recommend a hair dryer. Be careful with the goo-gone, you might want to dilute it because it could damage the clear coat.

Goo-Gone didn't hurt the clear coat. Doing it on a hot, sunny day helps.

Use a heat gun or hair dryer to soften the tape on the bottom of the spoiler then use floss or fishing line to get between the trunk and tape.

Is the OEM lip spoiler held on by 3m double sided tape too?

If it's impossible to remove with goo gone, goof off, or any of those other adhesive removers, sometimes you have to use what's called an eraser pad. This is what professional shops use and I'm sure if you don't want to buy the pad itself, you can go to a body shop and they will make quick work of your tape for next to nothing. Sometimes that stuff is really hard to remove so that's why you use these pads. They are safe and you can buy pads that will fit your drill.

I see you're interested in the CF spoilers lol.

I used heat gun, then fishing line and it popped right off. The hard part is removing the existing tape. Used goo-gone and a lot of fingernails lol. Finished up with a polish then alcohol wipe down to ensure proper adhesion. I used the OEM bmw betalink for the new CF spoiler. It's alot of work lol but I know for sure it will stay on.

Thank you very much for your tips

So it's definitely something simple you can do yourself rather than paying the body shop to do it? So maybe an hour? I suppose my spoiler should be a bit easier since it is less than 4 months old?

Thanks for your tip. Plastic razor on the paint? Should I apply express wax before using the razor (as in claying?)

the reason you use a plastic razor instead of a real razor is so it wont scratch the paint.

Give this a look:

Oh it's extremely simple. The old spoiler removal is. The residue tape is super annoying though but like vastano said, you could try the plastic razor.

As for installation, some people swear by 3m tape so that could be an option. I stuck with oem beta link

Damn it. So you had no idea about the exhaust hanger tool, and I had no idea about this. Would have saved my finger nails. Great to know.

It's possible too cut the paint with fishing line if you get carried away with the sawing motion. I use(d) a t-shirt and heat. As you heat, pull one layer of the shirt under the spoiler with a slight sawing motion. This puts some upward pressure on the spoiler as well.

I don't like to put Goo Gone on the paint so I use a 3M Eraser wheel.

Where does one get a 3M eraser wheel?

Also, how are people lining up the new spoiler to make sure it goes on properly? I envision myself putting it on all wrong. I was thinking maybe a grease pencil to mark where the edge should go?

  • Mark center of spoiler with grease pencil
  • Mark center of trunk lid with grease pencil
  • Dry test fit
  • Its easier to use (2) people when doing install to line up center marks & both ends - peel off tape liner and stick down pressing firmly along for best tape adhesion. Best to do this after the car has sat out in the sun and the car/spoiler are warm (3M also makes an Adhesion Promoter, but I've never used it & had no problems)

For those that us BetaLink - hopefully you will never have to remove the spoiler to repaint - because removing parts adhered with BetaLink will damage the paint underneath

You can get the 3M Eraser Wheel here (but these are mainly used for pin stripe removal not adhesive residue):

http://www.amazon.com/3M-7498-STRIPE...m+eraser+wheel

3M also makes an aerosol adhesive residue remover that does not harm paint found here:

http://www.amazon.com/3M-03618-Adhes..._bxgy_hi_img_z

I have always just used fishing line & Goo Gone with absolutely no problems or damage...

Mine come in today from IND, will most likely use the heat gun, fishing line technique. I have also always used goo b gone with no issues but may try the #M adhesive remover to see how that works. I am going to use 3M tape instead of the betalink.

I got mine on eBay. It's not that hard to line up. It's obvious where it should be on the trunk. The only part you need to worry about is making sure that it's even side to side. The performance spoiler is a touch shorter than the trunk so you just need to make sure the same amount of trunk is showing on each end.
