You can't stretch a 225 onto a 8.5". Well, technically you can but it would be unsafe. You'd have to go 235 or 245.

225/35-19 is specified for 7.5" to 9" wheel width for PS4S tyres: https://www.michelinman.com/upload/m...t-sport-4s.pdf

Are they that much wider than standard tires? I can't imagine a 225 stretching over that much without having that stretched look?

Going by their US market specs showing width on the measured wheel (8" wide), they are 231mm (9.1") sidewall to sidewall, so 225mm is the nominal width that is rounded down to. The tyre width on a 9" wide wheel is still going to be wider than the rim width with the 225/40-18 tyre, so will not be "stretched".

I always used this guide as a standard and it's showing an ideal size for an 8.5" to be 235/245. 225 is the minimum but I would run it in the 235/245 for safety reasons. That's just me though as I believe this chart to be the industry standard.

It is a rule of thumb guide, but it doesn't take into account tyre profile and consequently the sidewall height. I would go by the manufacturers specifications, as they have engineered and tested the tyres to meet those specifications. For example the rule of thumb guide says a 225 wide tyre can be used on a 7.0 to 8.5" rim.

Michelin says that for these 225 wide PS4S tyres, the rim width range is:
7.5" to 9.0" - 225/35-19, 225/35-20, 225/40-18, 225/40-19
7.0" to 8.5" - 225/45-17. 225/45-18, 225/45-19
6.0" to 8.0" - 225/50-17, 225/50-18

The rule of thumb table only applies to 45 profile tyres in the Michelin PS4S range, the lower the profile the wider the rim that is required.
