2019 BMW M550i  [8.00]
Top Speed limit? (With Option 840)

Where is the speed limiter set with the M550i and the pilot super sport tires? My build sheet says increased speed limiter, is it only 155mph or does it get bumped up higher?

Pilot SS tires (or equivalent speed rated) are required to increase the speed limiter to 155 MPH. Otherwise I heard that it is 130 MPH or thereabouts.

MY2019 has increased top speed limiter as standard option. That would be the 155mph. At 130 mph is that US?

I thought all BMWs were limited to 250kph (155mph).

I think it's market specific. I think just North America had limits of 130mph on some models, never read about that limit on any BMW's in Europe though.

Here it seems to 155mph for most bar a few select models.
Something to do with a nod to emissions I think / gentleman's agreement.

Personally totally irrelevant for me in the U.K. as it's way beyond any legal or safe limits here and I don't intend to track it or take the car to Germany ( although I do wish I could legally just try out 155mph for myself just the once for the experience.)

When you have the increased top speed option it's limited to 155. If you car is fitted with all-season tires it's 130.

I don't think the car limits you to that speed in the U.K. the tyres may be rated with a top speed of say 130mph fair enough but the car won't stop you going past that speed , unwise obviously.

Personally only ever seen reference to this 130mph limit for North American cars .
Perhaps need to look at the us website to see as the U.K. one I'm sure states limited to 155 ( at least for the 540i)

My car is EU spec , speed limiter kicks in at 260km/h (speedo indicated)

Same for my earlier E92 335i

Increased speed limiter was not an available option.

So what happens when you change tires - either AS to performance or performance to AS? Do you have to go get your car re-coded for the new top speed limit?

Seems like a silly way to do it.

not true...

unless you have option 840 you are limited to 130mph regardless of tires. Weird yes. But i've had detailed discussion with BMW about the absurdity of putting 186MPH tires on and then limiting top speed top 130MPH even with sport pkg.

Doesnt matter if YOU switch them because they didnt deliver the car to you with those tires.

They limit the top speed to 130 (and its unchangable) if you get the car with non performance tires. if option 840 (increased top speed limiter) is NOT on a build, then at least in the US the top speed is limited to 130 and there is no way around it I know of (maybe hacking the ecu? Im not into that scene).

The best option if one cares about the top speed of the car is always to order the car with the performance tires that allow option 840 to be on the car (build guides will tell you "XXX tires add 840 to the order", and then swap them later if wanted.

I dont work for BMW I am just saying how they do it... and I am 100% sure that if you dont have 840 on your order, then your top speed is limited to 130, and the way to get 840 on an order is to order the "correct" tires. Its not an option you can have your CA add, it adds itself based on your tire selection.

So what's interesting is this just made me go back to the ordering guide (for BMWNA), and option 840 "Increased top speed limiter" is listed as standard for the M550i. However, so is 29W w/performance RFTs.

Tucked away under the selection of 29W all-season RFTs is a note that 29W deletes 840.

So the outcome is the same as described, except that BMW can advertise the increased top speed as standard even though it gets removed if you select the wrong tires.

You would think selling a car with a standard option, you would only offer the tires to meet that spec. It is not made clear in wheel/tire selection. Sucks for those whom choose the all seasons. Everyone should find the opportunity to push it to its top speed at least once.

Just out of curiosity, what is the every day difference between 130mph limit and 155mph top limit. I do not see M550 as a track car but maybe I am wrong.

For every day driving, I don't see why it would matter. The highest speed limit I have encountered is 80 mph. I understand people don't drive at the speed limit and that having the ability to go faster IMHO can actually be a safety feature but 130 is 50 mph higher than the highest limit and ought to be more than enough. Am I missing something?

About 25 mph.

Really for me it's more that I just spent a bunch of money on a car that is capable of certain things, and I would like to be the one that decides if and when I (safely and reasonably) push the car as close to its limits as I'm comfortable. Even if I only ever take track the car once in the entire duration of ownership, I should be able to do that without an arbitrary limit being placed upon me.

It's not an everyday thing. It's a matter of being able to on the rare occasions where it is possible or would make sense.

Fair enough. I wonder how many here have ever gotten up to 155? Highest I ever got to on an open road was 110. That was in my 12 cylinder 850 some years ago, and it was loafing.

101 passing a car pulling a trailer on a steep hill going up. Wanted to pass him before the road returned to one car in each direction. Pulled strong and felt like I was going 60. Slowed because I passed him and wanted to return to my normal speed. Car appeared to have plenty of power left.
