I just slapped on 20" 275 / 285 Pirelli Sotto Zero Serie 2s yesterday on stock rims.
Came out of office today and wasn't bad at all, per the first pic. Nor'easter just started and I breezed from office to gym. Maybe an inch on the roads and I kept all in comfort, AWD, DSC on and D1. When I came out of gym 1.5hrs later, the world changed! That's the 3rd pic. Must have been easy 4 inches on the ground and close to whiteout conditions, that I snapped along the way home. Actually passed Subarus and the likes, floundering on hills and wiped out in culverts, etc. Then I finally made it home per last pic. M5 w/ snow tire setup performed admirably!!! The one big difference is that once the snow gets deep, do not keep it in D! Upshifts too quickly and you lose touch and bite with the road. I switched to S1 and controlled all manually from there. Keep S in the low gears and that affords you the bite and control needed in blizzard conditions.

Had a slushy commute in today and chose D3 as opposed to manual. Worked like a charm! However, when it's real bad like last night, it's manual shift for me.

Was out and about most of the day during the first storm of the year and I must say I'm impressed. I'm super confident driving in snow (over 25 yrs of driving in it) and really pushed it and to be honest I was not expecting this kind of stability. Multiple lane changes at highway speeds through center drifts, 2 wheels on the shoulder etc and the awd system handled everything I threw at it without a problem.
Braking with the pirellis was just OK. I now know what to expect with them and I'll just adjust distances accordingly. Be safe |

What size Pirelli's you running and always best to use engine braking in conjunction with reg brakes. That's why I go manual shift.

I was in manual also. The tires perform very well overall. However, I've had better braking on icy surfaces. The Michelin's are hard to beat in that department but they were not available anywhere. Ps got my permit in '86 also but I felt old when I wrote down 30 yrs plus so I changed to 25 yrs plus. ))))))) |

Another snow and ice storm in the NE, once again left me in awe of this car. For such a performance car, to also perform equally as well in the snow, is an amazing feat! As a reminder, I have the sotto zero serie 2', in which snow tires are a must on the car. I find driving the car in all comfort w/ manually shifting in S3, gives me the best control and "bite" on the road.

Did you learn summer tires are a bad idea on ice and snow, because Awd has nothing to do with stopping. I used to run Dunlop winter sports on my evo, many moons ago, it was awesome. On the oem Yokohama’s I couldn’t get up or down my small hill in Portland with 6-9 inches of snow. With the Dunlop’s it was not an issue.

Awd with proper snow tires is good fun. Only rain here, but I would love to get some snow tire on my m5c (do they come in 20s?) and for around! Edit: they do! Hmmm....might be a good excuse to go to the mountains! |

Stunned a neighbor this am! He lives on a hill around the corner and was shoveling, when I effortlessly drove right up the hill w/ a few inches on the road. He couldn't stop staring at the car, and followed me all the way till out of sight. Such an amazing machine, a true "jack of all trades" master of ALL!
