to iphone or not to iphone

so i figured this was the best place to put my poll

I love the idea of an iphone, and I think it is the perfect idea for a college student. my biggest problem is that there is not support for sending/recieving pictures as text, rather only as email. I'm hoping they will release an update/upgrade/app that allows this, but I have been toldnot to hold my breath. right now I have a voyager and i'm signed with verizon, but I'm going to school in a few months and moving to VA so I'm probably getting a phone with a local # down thereand was thinking (if they fix the bugs with the new one) the 3g would be perfect. My other problem is that I have unlimited texts to everyone ( VZW and non VZW) built into my plan now.. what does ATT offer in respect to that? I don't wanna be paying to text people with VZW because most of my friends have that...

what do you all think?

No, it doesn't. For all the things Apple got so right with the iPhone, there are still things they're idiots about. MMS is one of those things.

AT&T has unlimited texts for $20 a month on an individual plan or $30 a month for every single member of a family plan.

People who want to share photos with their friends while on the go? Apple claims that the iPhone is a revolutionary mobile device, but it lacks features found on free handsets. That's just in poor form. It's not like it would be difficult to implement.

or the N96 or the HTC Touch Pro. Seriously, there are so many more powerful/advanced options, that I was completely okay selling my 1st gen iphone after a week of ownership

I want a phone I can use with one hand. The iPhone requires two hands. Very incovenient for me.

I like the iPhones but they are more for kids putzing around. Businesses like smarts phones, backberrys, etc.

For me The blackberry pearl fits the bill just fine.

The iPhone are just like the iMac, a niche market for die hard Apple fans.

last I checked, there are somewhere between 250 and 300 million cell phones in use.

6M iPhone is qhat percentage of 250mil?

Apple is making the same mistake with iphone they did with their computer. No corporate apps, emails, secure messaging and one carrier (AT&T). As a result there will be a surge like in the Apple/Lisa days and then it will taper off. They are stuck with AT&T and their old network for a few more years.

You will not survive in the mobile space without an open platform which is where google is heading.

By a phone, pick your apps/interface, and then picka carrier. The future is changing for the better and the consumer, something apple has never liked be so closed.

Apple's computers have less than 5% market share worldwide compared to Windows. The iPhone buyers have Macs at home for the most part. It is simply an accessory for 5% of the computer market.

As someone who has gone through more phones than probably all of you combined, and always wants to newest gadget, I can definitely say yes to the iPhone. I just got mine for the first time yesterday and it's amazing.

It's a phone. There is only so much a phone needs to do, and it pretty much does all of it and then some (ipod features). With the apps now, it becomes even more powerful to give you everything you need. Things like a good GPS is more important than just for navigation, but for integrating into programs knowing where you are. Then apps like yellow pages can help you find things.

There's not much more I could want out of a phone really. Past that, I have a laptop to do anything more complex, and the iPhone is the only phone that can do all of it smoothly. I came from Windows Mobile, and even when it does something well, it's rarely smooth. Just look how choppy the new Touch Diamond and Pros are.

I'm very happy and don't know how I lived without it before. I still maintain it's not a full "smartphone", but it's basically as good and runs ten times better than WM smartphones do.

Full exchange support with push Email/calendar/contacts, can use the CISCO IPSec for security. You can download apps for almost anything you can think of. The iPhone interface is more open than your give it credit for.

You don't need two hands to use it... BTW, do you type on your BB with one hand?

And they probably still will favor BB's in the near future, but push email on iPhone now actually presents a legitimate challenge. BB's will always be better to type on, but the iPhone's expandability and potential for enterprise specific apps gives it a decent shot at some market share in the future. To the first part of this comment, I'd disagree. The iPhone is as serious a smartphone as you'll come across.

Is this comment referring to the iMac specifically or Macs in general? I'd disagree if you're talking about all Macs, it isn't a niche market at all. If you're talking about the iMac specifically, then yeah, the integrated monitor has always been a big turn off to me. Even if I could game on a Mac, I'd never use an iMac because you're stuck with the built-in screen forever.

In my opinion, I could easily survive if the iPhone didn't have a phone part. It's primary function is as a mobile web device, not a phone. The phone just happens to be part of the package.

Which is why they added Exchange support and push email along with the ability for enterprise customers to deploy apps for in house use through the app store...

You guys may be to young to remember history and consequently fall prey to marketing hype.

20 years ago the average car got 20-25MPG. This is still true today. 30 years ago we had a disel rabbit that got 50MPG. However, the Prius is the second coming.

20 years ago Apple had less the 5% market share and this is still true today. When Steve Jobs is gone any vision at apple will go with him. He is making money off iTunes and iPODs more than anything.

The future will be a generic phone running google O/S. It will be open, cheap, and with google's Internet portal they will dominate. If you believe otherwise, you are mistaken.

Everyone needs to taken note at Microsoft's and Googles market cap compared to Apples. Yeah Apples has a great music player, and a cool phone, but we forget the majority of phones sold are free, included with a plan and have basic audi/texting. If you have an iPhone, chances are you have a PS2 or Xbox, but that is a small small fraction of the world.

To be fair they excel in the markets in which they choose to compete. They have a 66% market share in the high end PC segment (machines that cost >$1000). You can't laugh at that nor brush it off. BTW, the overall number is 14%, not 5%.

Sure Jobs talks it up like there are three divisions of Apple, but their bread and butter is still the Mac. He can sell all the iPods and songs he wants (over 5 billion last I checked) but if the Mac sales aren't there, it's all for naught.
