335 xi oil temp?
Really enjoying the new car. I have owned twin/bi turbo cars in the past but noticed my oil temp, in normal driving conditions, runs from 230-250 degrees.
I owned an 02 Audi S4 that ran 225 degrees pretty consistently, and at that time, i was driving under more harsh engine conditions. I read in Roundel Magazine that there have been some issues with high oil temps in the new twin turbo engines? Curious if anyone was able to shed more light on the subject or if I'm just overreacting... Thanks

did you get the sport package with the 18" upgrade wheels? that option gives you the oil cooler on the xi model. if you did not get the 18" then you wont have the oil cooler. you can check by looking for a vent in the front passenger wheel well.
o dont think you should be hitting 250 temps stock, unless you drive really hard. but i also dont think 250 temps should be causing any harm. 250+ you may want to get it looked at.

i did not realize that included oil cooler...? i do not drive hard, but notice i sit at 230 degrees unless im driving at higher rpm's in lower gears - then i see it get up to 240-250, within a few minutes. i guess im just comparing it to my past experiences with turbos... realize different engines will operate at slightly diff. temps... thanks for your info - appreciated.

Don't compare different engines.
This engine operates at 230-250 F. If you see over 250 then you can start worrying, but you shouldn't. I drove my car hard pleny of times and never saw over 240-ish. It sits around 230.

Yeah I'm usually right around 230-240 also. I do tend to drive pretty hard (even though I'm not yet at 2000 miles) plus its been somewhat hot out - Ive seen it creep to dead on 250. I didnt get the 18" wheels with the sport package and therefore dont have the oil cooler - maybe someone can chime in on just how this oil cooler works (i.e. does it just kick in over a certain temp?).
I know there are many threads on here debating the oil temp, particularly with people using piggybacks/ECU reflashes and other mods and people who track their cars. I've read on here somewhere that the N54 engine is designed to run up to close to 300 degress before limp mode kicks in. Bottom line (and like I said, there are a lot of people posting about this) it seems like 250 or under is absolutely no problem - that seems like the standard temp. |

FWIW - My 335xi e90 with oil cooler has been running right around 240 for most casual and semi-spirited driving. It's only crept up to 250 when pushing the car hard.

My recollection from the many other threads here and there on this is that the engine is designed to run hot at 230-250 as that helps to make it more fuel efficient and less polluting. I have been monitoring my temps closely and so far have not exceeded 240 even though I do not have the secondary oil cooler. But I am in coastal New England so the ambient temps don't get that high.
