Unhappy So many X3s with halogen headlights

What's up with that? Thought it was a 28d problem, but more Internet searching showed that most 2014-15 X3s came with halogens. Now I'm not saying you cannot have good halogens, but I think BMW lost the plot with them a while back. Recall that the F30 LCI with halogens was rated poor by the IIHS.

Anybody else noticed this trend?

The X3 isn't a luxury vehicle, there was no reason to have anything but halogens

That's an interesting class distinction. Is it made seriously or in jest? I don't consider being able to see while driving at night something that is the preserve of the rich.

BMW in the 1980s and Cibie since the 1970s showed that you could make perfectly good halogen headlights. It seems lately the move towards multifaceted reflectors has resulted in a dramatic nosedive in headlight performance on most vehicles. Mind you, the USDoT rules are no help. That gang wouldn't know a good headlight if you ground it in their face. My UK spec E30 used projector low beams in the outer lights and "driving light" pattern high beams as the inner set. Those worked well, although some 100W bulbs in the high beams helped a lot in heavy rain.

The X3 is not a luxury car, that's serious. A Jeep Cherokee is better appointed. It's just a standard middle of the road small SUV.

If the X3 was a luxury vehicle, xenons would be standard along with leather, the top of the line infotainment system, etc. I can go to the BMW dealer right now and buy an X3 with plastic seats, no GPS, halogen lights, no sunroof, and a 4 speaker stereo out the door 35k. That ain't no luxury car.

BMW sells luxury models but if you bought an X3 thinking it's a Mercedes or Porsche you were mistaken.

on the F25 X3, HID (xenon) lights was an option on 28i's and standard on 35i's. Most people neglect lights when choosing options and they made many more 28i's than they did 35i's. So not unusual that you see more X3's with halogens.

Luxury or not has nothing to do with halogen lights...at one time halogen was the best you could get and then when it wasnt, the better technology was an option. This was common in most manufacturers, if you even had an option.

Today, all G01 X3's come with LED lights, but full adaptive LED lights are an option, not standard. So the best lighting technology is still an option, not standard...

BMW should set a standard and it should come with xenon lights only, just my opinion. On other hand, they are trying to be flexible and let the buyers decide about what features they want to have in their vehicle.

I personally prefer halogen, they're proven to work for the last 60 years. They also cost $10 to replace when they wear out compared to $100.

I wonder how expensive it is to change a bulb on the new LED headlights or if its even possible

I think people here dont get the serie 3 market.

Serie 3 market is for people who want to feel a high end luxury vehicle, but not having one.

9x+% of people thinks because you have a BMW remote key , you must be rich, and this is a fact that I'm pretty sure a lot of you already noticed.
getting a X3 no HID, people just dont care, theyll get it because BMW logo, and BMW can sell it a bit cheaper.
Why do you think they screwed up with the ///M shit, now, all BMW can get the ///M logo without the engine/trans/suspension.
People, dont care, they can afford a M and tell friends its a M, market is like that.

Best example is with the E90 series, huge success, low monthly payments, good buyback. 323 and 328 RWD with vinyl and no-option, there's a ton on the road.

But a 328 or more like 335 or a 35i fully loaded, is in the ''luxury'' level imo, not high end, but luxury for sure. Same level of equipment of the x5, q5, q7, cayenne, etc. Size is changing but equipment is the same kind of performance.

Of course you have Hyundai with kind of the same equipment, but forget about nice 0-60, handling, quality, etc.

Good sellers are rav4, crv, tucson, and sorry its not near a X3.

Exactly. BMW sells luxury cars, but not all BMWs are luxury cars. A base model 320i with vinyl seats is not a luxury car. It's better made than a Hyundai yes and if you can't afford a nicer model, at least you have decent taste in automobiles and picked a real car not some POS Kia, but it's not luxury or "baller".

The X3 is not a luxury SUV and never sold or marketed as one, it's an entry level platform. There's nothing luxury about an x3, at all. The X5 is/was the luxury model. Now the X7 is. The X5 is now being beefed up to compete with the "performance" SUV market.

Just an FYI: The 2015 Mercedes GLA base model had halogen headlights and xenon headlights were an option. Many other Mercedes around that time had an optional "lighting package" that included xenons, with the base having halogens.

I wanna get some licks in before the thread closing.

The X3 is not a luxury vehicle but requires
1) luxury premium fuel
2) thousand dollar brake jobs
3) $150 oil changes
4) odd ball size luxury run flat tires

Please explain this

Please explain this
-The minimum fuel octane in the owner's manual is AKI 89. That's not premium.

-A set of front/rear brake pads (Centric 104 which are the best for an X3) and sensors costs $65 shipped. If/when you need rotors at around 100k miles, a set of 4 cost $200.

-I pay $90 at my BMW dealership (Fields) for an oil change and detail. That includes a free loaner vehicle and a chef cooked meal while I wait.

-Runflat are optional, you didn't have to order them when you bought the car.

There's nothing about an X3 that costs more than Jeep Cherokee.

$150 oil change? Nope. Lived in multiple states and they're $90 at every dealer and independent shop. That's for a N55 too.

$90 oil change ? Nope. I live in northern Indiana my whole life. I do my own for about 35 bucks. The N52 uses the exact same as the N55

How in the hell do you change the oil in an N55 for $35?

The cheapest LL-01 API SM approved oil runs around $9 a quart. You need 7 quarts. That's $63 for oil. The oil filter costs $15.

So please tell me how you're changing the oil in your N55 for $35 when at BARE MINIMUM it costs $78.

Ok, I redid my math. It's more like 41 bucks. If your buying oil by the quart and oil filters individually your a sucker.

Yup, they sell it everyday there. Usually it's on sale near me (about 2 bux) then I buy two or three.
