Air Intake For M3.....anyone??

I know Gruppe M has a serious intake for our M3s, but almost $3000 is ridiculous! I have spent and will spend money on my M as most of you know/see. But com' on, 3 g's for an intake...

Is anyone else coming out with or going to come out with an intake system for the E9x M3??????

Dinan stated that they were planning to come out with an intake, an exhaust (inc midpipes), and possibly headers for the E9x M3. This is per Steve Dinan, during a conversation as he was taking me on a tour of their Morgan Hill shop about a month ago.

Dinan would be your best bet. When it is released. Its funny saying Dinan is cheap, only when comparing it to GruppeM.

The key to an intake is it being sealed. Companies like AFE make open intakes that just suck in hot air.

I would pass on the K&N drop-in and wait for the Helene Performance Streamline drop-in filter. Their next project is the 2008 M3. They made a nice setup for the E46 M3, dropin filter and streamline air ducts.

When is DINAN supposed to release their intake?

I was looking at the design of the Gruppe-M vs. that of the stock intake box, and they don't look very different to me!

Here is a diagram of the stock intake:

My question now becomes, is it worth the money for the same design merely in carbon fiber? Has the intake produced proven horsepower/torque gains? I'm thinking I will wait to see what Helene can bring out of the motor with their drop-in filter. I didn't own an E46, but from what I hear Helene produced the best drop-in available. Can anyone shed some light?

Don’t know of anyone that has dynoed the Gruppe-M, but I can tell you first hand, its not mearly switching for CF (that just makes it look good and you save a bit of weight). Where the real difference lies (this is from first-hand knowledge) is that the filter design and materials etc…. are much, much better quality and allow for a freer air flow. Also, the sound is fabulous!!!! My intake actually drowns out the Remus Exhuast sound even with open windows. So the complement each other seamlessly as the sound comes from the front but is somewhat “filled” with the exhaust.

The design looks the same, correct? Don't get me wrong, I think this piece is brilliant and beautiful but I can't justify the price. The stock airbox already uses a cone-style intake filter in quite a large main intake compartment. I have been in contact with Helene and they are in the process of designing their Streamline cone-filter which will greatly help increase airflow, and cost a lot less than the Gruppe-M!

PS - Congrats on your dyno numbers after the ECU reflash, they are wild!

REALISTICALLY...the price is insane for anyone.
I COULD buy the Gruppe M, but I won't, if for no other reason then out of principal!

No worries mate!! Your opinion I think may be valid, it is expensive. I think the design is not identical though, it is a tad larger, less restrictive and further isolated from heat etc... but don't know these things for a fact.

Has anyone actually seen the inside of the OEM intake ducts? They might have chambers/features for noise dampening whereas the GrouppeM intake might not, which would result in better flow, and obviously, louder operation. I am just speculating as I have not seen the insides of either system.

Most likely.

Helene Performance made bigger and better flowing air ducts for the E46 M3, plus a drop-in filter. They now have new M3 to R&D.

Very good question, I'll check mine out and see how it looks!

Just got the GruppeM installed today. Thanks to IND and WheelSTo once again. We also had a nice photo shoot. Nice meeting everyone. I'm sure pics will follow. The car IMO does have a better throttle response, and the sound really pics up above 4000 rpm which I think is perfect.
