MPS4 in snow !!!
Not had my MPS4s on long but got to test them in the snow this morning. They are the best summer tyre I have ever used in the snow. Normally summer tyres just get buy but you have to be very careful, but these have more grip and give you a bit more confidence.
Anyone else found this? |

Yes I have found the same when I got caught out one year at the Harrogate show ground at an event, it suddenly snowed and left 2-3 inches of snow and I was driving it was late at night around 11pm so it was just me and this fresh snow, I looked at the M3 I thought well I'll give it a go but wasn't hopeful, I went very carefully but I was amazed I got out the grounds and up into Harrogate.
MPSS wouldn't have moved much more than a few feet, they're not an alternative to winter tyres but they worked that night.

Guess it being fresh snow instead of compacted snow helped you a fair bit! |

It is all relative, getting a bit of grip can give a false sense of security.
If you get the right kind of snow, they may (to a degree) give some grip. Get the wrong combination/state of snow and they won't allow you to be going anywhere, certainly won't help you stop. Looking at some of the news reports from the "snowy south", it is clear tyre grip (or rather lack of), is having a big part to play in the 'drama'. There is hardly any snow, in most of the reports I've seen, to be causing such hold ups. |

I had a couple of 'ABS moments' with my MPS4S last night and the snow was only a light dusting at that point. They're great tyres, but not in these conditions IMO.

Optimum performance/tread pattern/proper grip etc.....wasn't addressed in my post for obvious reasons as that wasn't what I was saying, clearly.

Have plenty of grip.
However, the car likes to slide when all 4 wheels are stationary on ice. Mainly due to weight and friction. Damn you laws of physics ! |

With luck often being on the right side of the equation, summer tires and any snow conditions are still an ill advised combination.
Glad to hear that everyone is OK. |

I have led most off on the wrong meaning of what I was saying. Sorry. I mean that for summer tyres they are the best I have ever used in snow. Still an absolute load of crap, but magnitudes better than some I have used.
I was out earlier in the middle of a snow shower that put 2" down and went up a bank near mine. Went up without any slip which would never have happened on my last tyres. |

I'm reading they are new tyres, that's probably allowing a bit of snow 'packing' in the tread and annular grooves. It the fresh snow is a bit sticky that can help hold the snow. 'Snow on snow' is one of the traction grip mechanisms for snow tyres, so you can have a degree of that mechanism working in your favour. Typically as we lose tread depth, that packing is far less effective. Or if the snow is wet or slushy, it can be as bad as running on wet ice. No ability to get any traction whatsoever. |
