Internet on iDrive (kind of)...

Well tonight I've set up the BMW Connected Drive. See the pictures below. Interestingly, this works off the cars internal SIM card, rather than my mobile phone, and consequently isn't costing me anything extra. The car comes with a 3year subscription to this!

Also, the moment the car moves, a notice appears to say that for safety reasons, using this service can only occur when the car is stationary. Stopped at traffic lights, the screen reappears.

I still need to set up the RSS feeds from the Connected Drive website, but I have been impressed with this so far.

Great: another distraction to increase the chances that one drives up someone's bum (mobile phones, lipstick application & grog being some others)

Ya thats nice. Its the exisiting system essentially allowing idrive to read RSS feeds. Unfortunately, connected drive even in its current form is a no-go in the USA !!

Wow mate, that looks awesome! Please can you give me a clue as to how you set this up? Which menu/options do you select? Thanks mate!

Hoax? No, just another reason to allow BMW to charge double for the M3 in Europe...

Booforty, I'll confirm the iDrive menu options I selected tonight for you, but basically you have to select "initialise the system" first, then when you connect the first time, it asks for your User Id and Password - these were texted to my mobile phone yesterday from BMW, after I filled in the web form at the dealers on Saturday.

Assuming you have your User Id and Password already, you should be able to set this up.

Presumably this feature will be coming to NA sometime soon,... perhaps on the 2009 model?

You can see in one of the photos mention of setting up 'My News', which should allow me to select my own sources. It tells me to set this up via the BMW connected drive website... that's today's challenge.

Looks like I found where to set up my own RSS feeds

I'm going to set up BBC News and Sport. If I get the chance I'll take some more pics tonight of the results...

Funny that. I couldn't see it either this morning. I phoned them up and the guy said he'd call me back when he'd looked into it. He hasn't called back yet, but I went back into the website, and suddenly it was there! I was beginning to think I hadn't looked properly earlier, but as you can't see that option, it must be something BMW allow on a per-user basis.

Give them a ring, I'm sure it won't take them long to add it to your login.

I will try again and speak to someone else another time.

Mine is a 57 plate and apparently the service has changed between 57 plate and 08 plate...

I wonder if this is more a case of they 'wont' do it, not that they 'cant' do it.

I'm sure if you keep on at them it should be possible. Your car's not that much older than mine.

Thanks for posting this dar2008 - I've had my car 2 weeks now and didn't know how to get this working. I've just registered on the BMW website, so hopefully I'll be up and running shortly.

How long did it take to get you set up? The website says I'll receive a text within a few days, but I spoke to someone at their call centre, and he suggested it would take up to 2 weeks!

Hi Kiernan,

I registered on Saturday and received the text yesterday,... so it took just two days! I'd suggest if you haven't heard anything by Thursday, giving them another call.

If this were in the US, sooner or later someone would plow into an streetlight and then go on to sue BMW for including it.

Actually, this particular feature is only accessible when the vehicle is stationary, unlike other iDrive features.
