What happened to courtesy and common sense?
On the school run this AM. Flat stretch of road with vehicles parked on both sides, such that others can only get through in one direction at any one time.
As I approach the 'bottleneck', there's already a heavily committed vehicle approaching from the opposite direction. I drop my speed such that I can let this vehicle pass safely, whilst myself maintaining some momentum and not having to come to a complete stop. As this vehicle passes and the road ahead being clear, I enter the bottleneck. However, just as I do so and have committed myself,a complete f*****g retard, who was further away from the opposite end of this restricted stretch of road and had not entered yet, decides to accelerate and enter this stretch rather than give way. The end result being that we both meet head to head in the middle of this stretch of road, with nowhere to go. What would you do? Does the Highway Code say anything? What would the Constabulary say? |

If the other driver wasn’t in a BMW then they should have clearly given way to a superior vehicle. If both were BMW’s, the law states both drivers should sit there honking the horn until one submits and reverses 😀

Well I am pretty sure what I would do but don't want to publish it, you would be made out to be in the wrong anyway as you would be classed as an ignorant BMW driver even worse if it was a 4series as it is now documented as they are the worst, however I think the police would ask for common sense to prevail yet do nothing to stop parking at least on one side of the road during school hours seems easy but hard to do.

What I usually do in those circumstances is sit in the middle and wait, until they realise I am bloody minded enough not to back off.

Someone has to give in. I had a similar situation a few years ago and I am quite stubborn but the the third party was more so. I refused to reverse. He wouldn't. Then I turned off my engine. I had 5 cars behind me now. He had a passing space he could back into. The guy behind me got out and gave this tosspot in his Smart hell... the guy started to reverse but wouldn't let me pass. I somehow got through. Then car number three hurled colourful language at the obstructive Smart driver. This went on for 15 minutes but felt longer. I made a video of it but lost the video when I forgot the password to my iPhone back up. Sometimes we just have to give way to the dickheads and make it clear. Where the fuck am I supposed to go? The Highway code is against reversing more than necessary... a half mile long reverse is a NO. Even when I have pointed out that I had no space to go to he kept saying but you saw me back off my drive. I was like dude seriously there are five cars... get back on your drive. These days I give way to the morons when I can rather than fighting about who is right or wrong. Some things aren't worth it... if it makes logical sense for someone to move and they can do it then they should but hey the problem is that common sense is not so common anymore.

Mind you I have been in a situation where 10 cars had to reverse in a country lane because some lady didn't know how to put her car into reverse. I thought about helping then thought no I am not insured on her car..

I had a similar incident in Marylebone a couple of years ago, where the person coming the other way couldn't / wouldn't reverse. I got out to ask her to pull back into a parking bay, but she told me she had just passed her test the previous day (had green L plates on the vehicle) and said "I'm not confident reversing back". I felt sorry for her, I offered to reverse her car back and all was fine.

Common sense and courtesy are largely dead in the UK; self-importance is the prevailing mentality. I've been in the OP's situation loads of times, but what pisses me off more are the dotards in shite cars that will drive straight at you knowing that you'll move rather than risk damaging your far nicer car.

I've never been in that situation where I couldn't reverse because of cars behind me but when I have had a Mexican stand off I always immediately reverse flashing my lights and making it clear I'll get out of the way and I'm often amazing how many times the other driver follows suit.
It diffuses the situation but can be confusing, to me to you.....

Why what would have done that you couldn't publish? Shot him? Dragged him out of his car and beaten him to death?

By sheer coincidence, my engine switched off and wouldn't start again . So I switched my hazards on, locked the car and went to drop the kids off on foot. Miraculously it started first time when I returned a few minutes later. I got into the car, reversed and casually made my way back in the direction I came from. Would like to know if there is any code/law covering these types of scenarios? |

Common sense requires uncommonly unwavering commitment to critical thinking, broader perspective on self absorption, restraint, and priorities. Perhaps that's why common sense is so uncommon.
