The other way to do it is to send the V5C/2 green slip with the retention document (V778) and a V62 form (application for a vehicle registration certificate). However, that process also takes time and you can only put the plate on once your V5 comes back showing the new reg. Sadly there isn't a way any longer to assign a cherished reg to a used vehicle immediately (it used to be doable when the DVLA had the local vehicle registration offices). |

tell the dealer, they can register it with your own plate. I did that with mine, I just needed to put it on retention via the online service, Very easy and no stress.
Its 2019, regardless of the age of the car you dont need to wait for log books and stuff, from putting my plate on retention it took less that an hour to register my plate on a new car!

The last time I did this on a used vehicle (from BMW) was Christmas 2018 and we had to wait for the V5 to arrive in our name. That’s what the BMW dealer told us and I verified by speaking with the DVLA. Keen to know if the process has changed but I assume your vehicle was brand new and unregistered? |

Yes, it's possible to instantly assign your registration to a brand new un-registered vehicle. It's a different process if the vehicle is used / previously registered (as I've described above). |
