x40i fuel consumption
Hi,
I'm deciding between X5 and X7 and was curious if the new owners have any info on X7 real world fuel consumption (I'm especially interested in your estimates/guesses on city MPG). Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! |

Sorry, I guess I should have phrased this differently: I meant ' what kind of MPGs do you see when you drive your X7'. I know that it depends on lots of factors, but it's always useful to hear what people are actually getting in terms of MPGs vs EPA estimates. Thanks again

Very good for the vehicle's size and weight. It terms of fuel cost, it should not be a deal breaker vs x5. The msrp will have a much bigger cost impact than fuel. |

I'm on my dealer provided first tank. The iDrive is showing an average of 12.5MPG with 176 miles driven. I'd say about half and half (city/highway) and more idling than normal (setting up various settings, etc).
This is for the X750 |

I feel like my X7 eats up gas. Well, it kind of dodges my feelings about fuel consumption. Sometimes, I am driving normally and just peek into the display and it says 385miles to go and I am like What?! it was just 430miles to empty the tank just like 20 minutes ago! the numbers do change fast when they want to. Lol.

Thank you everyone for the input. It sounds like for 40i city consumption would not be too bad. I was just worried that being heavier than X5, X7s MPG would be much worse in city driving, but sounds like they are similar

I have the 2023 X7 40i and I get similar. The computer shows full tank range from 450-530 and we use regular 87 octane. When I first got the car it shows 603 lol. So it’s not accurate for sure and fluctuates so I calculate manually get around 20-22 which is great for this size vehicle

It varies a lot with the type of roads/traffic. In my nearly 3 years with my 40i, around my home, which is lots of stop and go, lots of elevation changes, I get 12-14 mpg, average speed is around 18mph.
I had a stint of a few weeks at a different "city" where the average speed was closer to 30mph, I saw closer to 20mpg over 400 miles during that time. On long highway trips, maintaining average speed close to 75mph, I see around 24 mpg. But if I keep average speeds closer to 65mph, I can get 28mpg. |

I wouldn't cheap out on gas on a premium vehicle like this. Edit: Higher octane fuel is more knock resistant and has additives that cost money. If you run a lower octane than is recommended, you will get knocks during high load or on hot days and the X7's ECU will pull timing back, which will reduces power and efficiency (which eliminates savings from using cheaper gas). It is not likely to kill your motor, but clearly not recommended to be cheap with gas on a $100k vehicle. Also, remember that if the ECU retards timing due to knocks, that means the knock has already happened in your engine. |
