Front license plate

Anyone else have an issue with the front license plate blocking the radar sensor?

Are you required to use the front license plate in NY? In PA we are not.

I live next door and didn't know that. I hate those front license plates.

Been going without a front plate, and so far no issues. Knocking on wood as I type this.

Just picked up my X7 last Friday. We are a front license plate state (Ohio). I did not have the dealer place the front bracket and plate.

Looks like they are working on getting off the front plates from Luxury cars in Texas from Sept 1, 2019, if the bill is passed.

Edit 6/19/2019:
Good news for anyone with an X7 Luxury Body Style that does not want to drill the bumper for a front tag. The SlyBracket is now compatible with the X7 Luxury Body Style that has the active shutter system directly behind the grille.

I've been working with Ernest at SlyBracket and he sent me the un-assembled parts so I could cut the loops so they don't hit the active shutter system behind the grille. I then provided the measurements of the loops back to SlyBracket. The spring loaded loop bracket works great and now does not hit the active shutter system or trigger the sonar system. I left my original post below.

https://www.slybrackets.com/

Original Post:
FYI. The slybracket is a great piece of engineering. However, it is not compatible with the 2019 X7 Luxury body style since it blocks the louvers behind the grille (given its current length) and will trip the Check Engine Light when the louvers close at highway speed. The spring driven U-bolts come permanently attached (set screws are glued in) and cannot be shortened. Tripping the Check Engine Light required "reprogramming" at BMW service for me.

I'll add that Ernest at SlyBracket is great and I've been working with him with some measurements to see if there is an opportunity to create a bracket that does not block the louvers for the X7 Luxury body style.

The what and why of active shutters or louvers here:

While I disagree with the premise that it should only apply to "luxury" cars, I really hope something like this passes. When I took mine in to get the plates last week, the dealer asked if I wanted them to install the front plates. I told them I wasn't thrilled about the idea of drilling holes in my bumper, and they said they agreed and only asked because it's technically still the law.

I'm in California which is also a front plate state. Had the same discussion with my dealer at delivery and we opted to not install. Going to roll the dice

Almost 1k Miles here in NY and no issues yet on the front plate. Fingers crossed, knocking on wood etc. I admit I do get a little nervous every time we approach a cop, but nobody has even looked twice at this point.

This Friday, I picked up my Black Sapphire M Sport beauty and the Jersey dealer asked me if I want him to hole my bumper, and I told him 'No". I now wonder how long time I can play the game?

Ohio law on front license plates is changing

Yes. In Ohio, we must display front and back license plates. However, that is changing come July 1, 2020 when you will only need to display the rear license plate.

There are some groups trying to keep the law from going into effect.

I live in Ohio and have been driving for a year with no front and no issues. I believe that DeWine changed it.

Over a year without a front plate here in NY. Never pulled over. Once got a ticket from a local cop while parked in a municipal parking lot. Young new meter maid local cop. Oh well. I’ll pay that fine once a year.
