Another Recall

Looks like BMW is expanding the PVC Valve Heater Recall to include Model Year 2006

http://www.consumerreports.org/car-r...lve-fire-risk/

Was just thinking about making the appointment for the Blower Motor Recall. Guess I will wait for notification and have both done at the same time.

This makes 4 the number of recalls against this chassis.

While I don't mind the dealer, I have two that I typically use, it's just a PITA getting back and forth.

My car is far from stock and my nearest dealer is a snake. For the blower motor recall I took it to a dealer 30 minutes away and then was denied a loaner car.

Was it an age thing? I’ve had that happen to me a number or years ago. It was annoying...

I was not old enough. I know it is for insurance reasons but come on I never been pulled over or been in any sort of accident.

Yeah, I understand.
My local dealer is a 30 minute drive, didn't buy there so no loaner.
I drive approximately an hour, hour and fifteen to my servicing dealer. Always a loaner whether I purchased there or not.

What exactly gets replaced as part of this recall? I was about to order a new oil separator because mine is malfunctioning, but if get a new one as part of the recall I'd be happy.

What happens when a hose cracks while doing the recall? Do those get replaced?

Yeah that’s what I figured. That sucks man. When this happened to me it was at a dealership (Acura) that was about 45 minutes from home. I wasn’t too happy.

When I finally got the documents regarding the blower motor it stated I could also be compensated for using an independent. Wished I had because dealer screwed up my FWM and BMW was basically like, "nope, only choice is to go back to that shitty dealer and risk more damage because they are franchises and we dont warranty their work."

I crashed my car at 18 and got to Enterprise place to then be told I can't get a loaner lol even though I had my insurance and all.

I wonder which heater they are going to inspect and or replace. The 06 PCV system has 3 heaters. One in the hose from the back of the valve cover to the separator. Another in the oil separator under the intake. And a third in the hose that drains the separator to the oil pan. I just changed the 2 hoses a few weeks ago. Hopefully I will get my $130 refunded.

the heater is built into the hose, they would be replacing it anyway.

Seems like an opportunity to get all the old, and likely brittle hoses replaced. maybe even a new oil separator.

Is that how the dealer does it? I partially pulled my intake so I could get room. I only needed to slide the intake up and forward a couple of inches to get to the connections on the back and under side.

Yes. When I had the recall on my Z4, I asked if they pulled the intake, the SA said they remove the alternator. The service repair paperwork indicated new alternator bolts on the parts list along with the pcv valve. The procedure may be different for the '06 N52 since it uses a different, style CCV system.

OK thanks. 06 wiring is on the back edge by the heater and AC hoses. It is tough to unplug unless the intake is pushed forward a little. Plus the hose connectors need to be pressed from back side. Redardless, I think they are going to need to remove the intake if they need to inspect the oil separator.

If they recall the '06 then I may cut a deal with the dealer and see if they'll do my CCV for discounted parts and free labor.

Lol, same thing happened to me. I took it in for the recall, got the car back with a blown FRM module.

The recall is only for the same part that is already on recall for '07 and newer N52s; which is p/n 11 61 2 458 830, angle connector. It doesn't cover the heaters that are on the hoses and the PCV valve itself.
This part is accessible only by removing the alternator, without removing the intake manifold, same as newer N52's than 07.

Well I figured out why they pull the alternator. The PCV is in the front of the intake. My comments above are referring to the CCV system (which also has 3 heaters). The CCV system feeds into the PCV. The hose between the CCV oil separator and the PCV is the strongest one of the system so it should be fine.
