Muffler Delete Z4M Video Clips
I've done this on my Viper and did a flowmaster muffler on my NSX's so I figured I'd try on the M Coupe before springing for the $2k mufflers.
I had the shop cut off the mufflers and install some fairly nice dual tips that are staggered perfectly for the bumper's radius and they look great. The sound is excellent. I guess its a cross between a raw race sound (with backfires and gargles on decel and downshift blips) and rice. Then again all M3's have a potentially rice sound depending on who's perspective. I've heard the M3 guys say that deleting their muffler looses torque. I think our exhaust is different i.e. X pipes and resonators and will need to drive back to back with a stock to determine if this is true for Z4M. Eitehr way, I figured at $270 I could always buy SS or Eisenman if I don't like. Below are some pics. I also did some drive-bys and roll on video clips with the wife and will post them as soon as I figure out how to upload/post. Last edited by Evoking; 08-19-2008 at 08:30 AM.. |

Like how the tips follow the body lines of the bumper. Interested to hear the sound, but I'd think it would be too loud.
You're in need of some new rear tires there, inside blocks look to be done.

Why so surpised. Open exhausts sound incredible on Porsches why not ours?
I can ask the shop where he gets the tips if you want. As far as making them I would suggest you visit a local muffler shop and just ask them to make the 2 pieces that replace the mufflers and just weld to your tips. |

Well, I guess I would have to drive in the car. My cousin has a Z06 with straight pipes and I hate it. The best way to describe it is... well it's kinda like ants crawling all over you from the vibration. Also, you can barely think from the decibel level inside. I mean it induces heart arythmia... not to mention all the unwanted attenion is demands from everyone. But in your video clip it doesn't sound so extreme, that's all.

I Think the part right before the rear section quiets it down a lot, along with the two sets of cats. Get headers and mid pipes and it will sound so very different. (and loud as hell)

Would this mod have a negative effect on performance?

Not that I've noticed. I believe with software it is actually improved. Here are a clips at idle and revving.

Well, any performance lost would probably be unnoticeable. It just seems that these engines are finicky when it comes to exhaust as the stock already flows well. Looks like if not done properly you could end up losing a few HP. I was just curious if you dyno'd the car. I haven't picked up my M Coupe yet, but this sounds pretty damned good even if at a few HP loss...

It seemed like it could have lost a bit at first. Or I was paranoid. But now it seems just as strong if not stronger. Its as if the software optimized itself.

Many have been asking about the setup and getting it done locally. They used the brackets off the mufflers on the new piping so I can swap like stock. I called my muffler shop but they don't know the manufacturer of the tips and gets them from his distributor for high end applications. They are a 2.5 inch dual double wall and would cost about $170 shipped.
You can call Jerry and mention the "Maserati tips" (which is what they call them since a Maserati was their first application) that he put on Aaron's BMW Z4 M. I'm getting an alignment and will take more pics. Jerry's Muffler & Undercar (972) 434-7774 590 State Highway 121, Lewisville, TX 75067 |

Today I put some Flowmasters in front of the tips so its no longer a true muffler delete. Sounds great but a bit deeper. I would say that without the mufflers it was more raw, raspy and biting. Now its a bit more hollowed out and throaty if that makes sense.
Also a bit less drone. Will post some sound clips soon of drive bys and accelerating so I can hear side by side as its hard for me to contrast them... |

Laidback, first you said it was a loss when you did muffler delete, now you are saying you have also tried Flowmaster mufflers and also lost 15hp?
1st off, no mufflers should be fine with a ESS tune. 2nd, why would Flowmasters loose 15hp to Magnaflow (which doesn't loose any) or stock? |

When i had the straight pipes/ muffler delete, i lost 15 hp was evident on the dyno and real world pull against cars i beat with just the stock exhaust, RPI scoops and tune before...I never tried the flowmaster as i went straight with the RPI GT exhaust, on which i gained the loss hp/ tq and added @ 8hp ...Have you dyno'd your car bone stock, and then with stock exhaust and tune, then with the muffler delete and tune?

I haven't dynoed but I have made some controlled runs in which the muffler delete was quicker by at least half a car by 100...but then again it could be 30 lb weight savings

Rpi exhaust is just a muffler delete, theres no reason why another muffler delete would lose hp while another gains hp.
Its not like there are many routing options for the last 1 foot of piping and pretty hard to make something really bad.
