Someone gouged my door -- worth filing a claim?

I have a love/hate relationship with Chicago. A big part of the hate is from how reckless people are with their doors/shopping carts/cars in general!

Just found this today on my rear passenger side door and it happened within the last 48 hours but not sure where. I already have an appointment with the bodyshop to fix some clearcoat on my bumper, should I tack this on and pay it out of pocket, or just file a claim?

I have good coverage and my rates are solid right now; I have no claims in my history (30 years old, no accidents, maybe 2 speeding tickets in the last 10 years). Can anyone with insurance experience chime in on whether it'd be worth it to file a claim for this, or bite the bullet and pay out of pocket? My deductible is only $50.

I had similar damage on my last car (Infiniti G37) from when my girlfriend scraped a fire hydrant and it was ~$900 OOP if I recall correctly.

Have them get you a quote for it, and ask your agent. Likely if you haven't had any claims in a while, it won't affect your rates. Ask the body shop to give you a quote for the "insurance pays" and for your cash rate. Also, that sucks. I avoid going to Chicago if at all possible...

Good idea, I'll make some calls on Monday. It'd be nice to file a claim if it won't affect my rates! Looks like I'm gonna be "that guy" who parks farther out in the parking lot from now on

Whether it's worth filing a claim or not is not something we can say. Its your insurance, deductible and budget...do what you can afford.

What osshnoo said. The top one will buff out easy enough. If you don't fix the "to the metal" one, it will rust, which just brings the pain 1000x since it's almost impossible to win that battle once it happens. It's a cancer for cars that just makes you sad inside.

Another consideration is www.drcolorchip.com. It does a pretty good job filling in deeper chips and scratches.

Personally I would try to polish out (within reason, don't go through clear!) what you can. As for the deep scratch, fortunately it doesn't look like the sheet metal got creased. I would fill it and sand down to blend but you have to know what you are doing.

It's not severe enough to warrant a complete door repaint imo and I'd much rather have the factory paint on my door.
