Lower hardtop while moving?

The 335 and 328s i've driven wouldn't let me operate the top up/down while in motion. In fact, if I started lowering it and the light went green... it'd lock there in place and I had to pull over into a side street to lower it completely.

But then I see this youtube vid

What gives? Is there a setting I need to toggle off?

Actually he could.

The reason you cannot operate the top while in motion is because the area where the license plate is mounted angles down towards the road and is obscured. Since it is illegal to operate a moving vehicle with an obscured plate, BMW made the top inoperable during movement:

Quote:
Because the tilting trunk lid obscures the license plate, the BMW's top cannot be raised or lowered with the car in motion.

+1

and thank you OP, I always wondered that....

So with this module, I can use the top to open/close while in motion??

I'm always anxious when I'm at a light putting the top up/down hoping the signal doesn't turn green...

yep, and that's exactly the situation I'd use this mod to avoid!

I don't need to operate it at highway speeds (actually doubt I'll ever need to use the mod at anything over 25mph), I just don't need it stopping halfway down. If the DOT had any logical sense they'd realize it's far more dangerous to have a halfway closed top locked in place and blocking the rear view of the driver, than for the plate to be momentarily out of view.

You can do it in other countries at speeds up to 40 but don't quote me on the speed part.

speeds up to 25mph - it's limited...

obviously most people should realize that with the top not fully up/down while in motion almost acts like a parachute and with the force of the wind...any faster and it'll be ripped right off...not to mention it's a hydraulic system held up by thin wires...

Best thing I ever installed in my car - pretty easy to use and makes it so much better - remote works from much further away to put the top up and down, top and window buttons are all one touch and it is nice to hit the button pulling in and out of parking spots instead of waiting. I also love that you can park, hit the button and turn off the car, get out and walk away hitting the lock button and it will put up the roof and windows and lock the car. Basically it does everything the car should do and you would like it to do!

I'd like to know too. Easy as a TurboTuner?

Also, how exactly do you customize the programming? Console into it with a laptop?

How times have changed since owning a e46 M cabrio, this action is not advised because it messes up your mechanism due to the wind force causing alignment issues. If I had a e93, I'd keep to my old ways, it better to be safe than sorry. http://bmwcca.org/forum/showthread.php?t=3026

+1 I have it on my car worth every penny I took my car to the dealer and had them take out the rear seats I couldnt figure it out myself. after seats were removed it took me like 30 minutes to get everything hooked up. Dealer guys were cool and didnt say anything about warranty and they reinstall the seats for me as well all for free
