335d >> Mobil 1 ESP or Castrol EDGE Turbo Diesel?
Hi All
My apologies in advance for talking about a boring and probably over spoken about subject, however, the 335d is due its 1st service and I will be buying the oil myself to save dealer costs. My confusion is that the dealer uses (Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W-30) and the BMW factory supplied a half litre top up oil in the boot which was (Castrol EDGE Turbo Diesel 0W-30) So, which one is right? The dealer or the factory? Also which one would you use in your diesel – the Castrol or the Mobil 1? Sorry for putting you all to sleep….. LRS

Either or....
They put Texaco Halvoline at mine at the last service as this is what the dealer is currently contracted to use!! However, my top up if needed is the Mobil 1 ESP. Jules. |

Sorry, but I need to get a bit more geeky regards oil.
Searching further Mobil has another oil for diesels >> (Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel 0W/40), but the weird thing is that the Mobil Oil web site has no record of it as a product – all they have is the (Mobil 1 0W/40) non-turbo diesel version. The other weird thing about the (Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel 0W/40) is that it is only rated to BMW Longlife 01 and not BMW Longlife 04 which is the preferred rating for the 335d. Maybe I’m getting too deep… Maybe I’ll just buy the (Castrol EDGE Turbo Diesel 0W-30) which is BMW Longlife 04 rated and be done with it! Move on, there is more to life than oil! By the way, Halfords is doing 10% of everything at the moment, so buying oil right now gives a decent savings.

Have you asked the dealer why they use Mobil? I know my local BMW dealer definately uses Castrol. Without researching viscosity of engine oils etc. it's hard to say whether the Mobil is ok. Ultimately, I'd stick with the manufacturers specified make and grade.
Porsche use Mobil and as you know they produce turbo engines, but the fuel burned is petrol. Noticed Halfords had 10% of everything - got another alloy wheel cleaning brush, one made out of sheepskin. Good product. |

How much do you anticipate saving by buying your own oil (check out the guy who usually changes cars before needing a service!!!). Also, how much oil do you need to supply.

Mobil ESP is LL-04 in the correct varient.
See here - http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-6362-mob...motor-oil.aspx Plus your local Halfords should stock it as that is where I bought my 1 litre reserve bottle from Jules. |

The dealer wants £95 for 6.5 litres of Mobil 1. I can buy 8 litres of it (with 1.5 litres extra for topping up) for £86 from Halfords with the 10% off.
Also found an article about the BMW Longlife ratings and it states that “BMW recommends Castrol” So, I reckon that the dealer is probably getting Mobil 1 on a bulk buy purchase. I would agree that OPIE OILS is a good place to buy, but the Halfords 10% sale makes it better, plus there are no shipping costs because I can order and reserve and pick it up locally. I know that OPIE OILS often do special promotions for BMW Car Club Forum at 10% now and then. Hey Helen, if you need a good brush, look no further than this one. It’s superb! http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/wheels.../prod_480.html You can obviously tell that I’m having a slow Friday!

Oil is oil, as long as it is the same spec and viscosity in line with LL-04 it'll be fine. If owners really want to stick with BMW AG recommendation of Castrol (because of a financial agreement) then absolutely fine also. |

Original recommended spec from BMW AG is Castrol. Audi Dealers do the same with oil suppliers. Jules. |

Remember that you need to be a little crazy to keep from going insane! Car detailing will do that nicely! Just got back from Halfords having bought the (Castrol EDGE Turbo Diesel 0W-30). The best thing is that I managed to get a further £5 off the total price. 8 litres for £75. Not bad when you consider that the dealer wanted £95 for just 6.5 litres.

Hey, another good one. Those would be excellent on the rather nice wheels on a 997 turbo I was looking at in the OPC this afternoon. Way out of my price range unfortunately - the car is nearly 4 times the price of my first house. Take it you're into detailing then? I must get organised as I do want to get mine done. The dealer has cleaned my car today, but you know how it is, it's never as good a job as you do yourself. Well done on the oil btw |

This oil is BMW LL04 Spec and is very reasonably priced.
http://www.lubetechshop.co.uk/produc...products_id=64 I find oil threads entertaining because you always see quotes like "x oil is great because I've run my car on it for 50k miles and had no problems" Not very scientific. I have a BMW K1100RS motorbike and the oil threads for those are incredible. You could use crude oil in those engines and they would still run for ever. I think you can feel comfortable buying a famous brand or let your wallet feel comfortable by buying equivalent product for a lesser price. Just an opinion Tony
