The Infamous Water Pump Replacement - 335is
Hey all,
I have fall victim to the dead water pump on my 12 bmw 335is. The bill is not cheap, and after a lot of reading on here, many replace the thermostat also at the same time. Is this really required? Does the thermostat crap out shortly after the water pump? I've heard mixed results about whether to change it or not. I plan on keeping the car for maybe another year, two years tops, and it's got 85K (Km) on it (52K Miles). Do you all suggest spending the extra money on the thermostat, even though it doesn't need replacing? Thanks! |

the thermostat is replaced at the same time because it can only be removed when the water pump is removed. It doesnt have to go bad to be replaced but is replaced at the same time due to convenience. Also many kits come with both as the thermostat is only like 70 bucks while the water pump is like 300

Thanks. Didn't realize the low cost of parts. The job is running me $1130 for the water pump and $1356 with the thermostat included. Just trying to determine which route to go.

Your $$$$ figures seem really high. You must not be DIYing it? You can buy the water pump, thermostat & U shaped connector pipe for under $400.00 total.
It's not a bad DIY really.. |

This is like a 3 to 4 out of 10 on the DIY scale. Very easy to access and do with some basic tools. Hardest part is bench pressing in the water pump while aligning in the 2 bolts and accessing the hard to reach bolt on top of the water pump if you don't have the proper tool. I changed mine at 70k miles on my first IS as a preventive measure. Currently at 61k on my replacement IS so will be doing the same eventually.
