Camshaft Cleaning?

Hello all, so I did the valve cover gasket job on my N54 the other day and noticed there was a bunch of gunk on the cams and etc. is there anyway to clean this without taking the valve cover off?

Marvel mystery oil (mineral oil and solvents) and back to back oil changes might do it, or BG upper cylinder treatment.
