Rear brake pad wear sensor keeps falling out of caliper

Suddenly the OEM one that was replaced when I did my brakes a few years ago fell out of the caliper and got chewed up.

Replaced it, clipped it into the caliper (heard it, click into place) and not even 500 miles later it fell out again and got chewed up.

Anyone dealt with this before?

Are you missing the tiny little metal spring? That thing falls out really easily when you're replacing brakes.

Brake job was done 20k miles ago.

It probably wouldn't have gone that long without the spring.
Maybe clip weakened and fell out?

When you guys say spring do you mean this clip?

It's a really really small, thin piece of metal that comes pre-installed with the sensor. It wraps around the center of the sensor itself. It's basically responsible for keeping the sensor in the pads. You can place the sensor into the pads without it, but it won't hold.

Both replacements had those.
Shoot. Is there any other reasons why this could happen?

Bad manufacturing tolerances on the pad?
