B58 engine explained
Here is an interesting video showing the B58 engine completely stripped.
Quite a few interesting facts like the sump windage tray concept. |

Awesome, thanks.
Note, this is the B58B30M1 edition of the B58, the newly updated version that is used in the 2019+ G05/G07, 2020 Z4 and the 2020 G12 LCI. Not sure (yet) if it's also used in the 2020 G30 or if BMW is waiting until LCI. The 2017-2019 G30 uses the original B58B30M0 edition. There's a fair amount of difference between the two engines, a lot of the M1 improvements were contributed by Toyota and in an effort to simplify manufacturing and likely reduce cost.

Wish my 2019 had the M1 engine, would imagine with Toyota the M1 engine is even more reliable...

My 2017 G30 had a couple engine issues early on. Worst was random stalling. Other than that, it's been great. I recall 2016 340i had a new teething issues, but nothing too terrible. I recall in 2010-2011, same niggly early issues with the N55. Wouldn't surprise me if the M1 has an issue or two to deal with over time... One thing they did was up the fuel pressure again for the M1/O1 versions. Other changes were for cooling, production simplification, etc...

No issue so far (finger crossed) but I have less than 2000 miles on it (I drive on the weekend only), so probably early days, mine was built at the end of 2018 (like Nov), so hopefully whatever was known at the time is sort out already...

Oh, and I had an issue with the display key's batteries going dead. That was replaced under motor plan. By far the nicest car I have owned. |

M0 is a great engine as well. One big change on the M1 was moving the VANOS to the front of the engine which will improve serviceability. My wife has a 2018 340i and I've got a 2019 540i so I can look if the 2019 at least is an M1 by comparing them.
A friend is making ~500whp on a pure stage 1 turbo M0 so I'd say they're fairly reliable, but we'll see in a year if I continue.to say that haha ![]() |

I thought this video was really interesting - looking forward to seeing what he does to get more power out of it! There is, as you would expect a lot of 2JZ vs B58 chat on the net, will be fascinating to see what aftermarket bits the supra community develops!

this 2JZ vs B58 thing is a bit apple to orange, 2JZ not subject to the kind of fuel economy/emission regulation/standard as a brand new car has to do today...

Very true, some of the supra fans seem a bit cross that Toyota went to BMW for an engine (and lots of other bits) but you're quite right, the 2J would never get through modern emissions regs. I bet someone will do a 2JZ swap in the new Supra soon... if they haven't already...
