Hood Badge Crooked
I bought a new 2019 430i Gran Coupe a couple of weeks ago and when washing it yesterday noticed the hood badge (roundel) is crooked. Turned slightly to the right. I notice if I look closely at the edges it appears to be attached with double sided tape, but I thought these had two pins and fit into grommets that are pushed first into two holes in the hood (actually the front end to be technical).
So, question for the forum, did BMW change how these attach? If so, fine, if not something is amiss here. Last edited by 155MPH; 09-03-2019 at 09:44 AM.. Reason: Typo |

Sounds like a trip to the dealer is needed as the car is new. The colored foil might not be positioned properly on the badge base. I've not seen a front or rear badge not using the pins, but don't have anything newer than 2015.

I’ve emailed the general manager of the dealership and is awaiting his reply. Was hoping someone on here has knowledge and can arm me with the facts on the 2019 badge so I don’t get spun a story by the dealer.

How to remove a front BMW emblem that has been installed with double-sided tape: 1) Place blue painter's-type tape on the vehicle's paint immediately around the circumference of the emblem to prevent scratching the paint. 2) Obtain a plastic card such as an old credit card, store gift card, hotel key. I save them because they come in various thicknesses which translates into various flexibilities of it as a plastic tool which is helpful for a task like this. 3) Slip the edge of the plastic card under the edge of the round emblem. Use a back and forth sawing motion and work your way around the emblem to cut through the double sided tape to free the emblem from the car panel. 4) Removing the tape residue is usually pretty simple by just rubbing the tips of your fingers on the residue to create some heat. 5) To reinstall emblem. Buy some 3M double sided tape designed to adhere auto trim at your local auto parts store. How to install an old style front emblem with long pins on a new style plastic car panel that requires a double side tape installation: 6) Like the rear emblem, it has two pins designed to use grommets to push into holes on the front of a metal hood. Use snips, clippers or a sharp utility blade to cut off the two plastic pins on the backside of the front emblem. 7) Apply pieces of double sided 3M tape around the inside circumference of the emblem. 8) Test fit the emblem on the car. If the alignment mounds on the car's plastic panel protrude too much and interfere with installation of the emblem, then use a sharp utility blade to carefully trim down the height of the alignment mounds. 9) When test fitting the emblem, use a pen to mark lines on the surrounding blue painter's tape that correspond to the four North, South, East, and West lines on the BMW logo on the front of the emblem. 10) Remove the remaining covering on the double sided that that is already applied to the back of the emblem. Align the lines on the emblem with your pen marks and press the emblem firmly onto the car panel. Remove the protective blue painter's tape. Hope this helps! |

Has the service dept refused to fix it? This sounds like a case of making a mountain out of a molehill. Getting a GM involved when you haven’t even spoken to service yet sounds like overkill.

Since I posted I have seen many replies indicating that is so, including instructions on how to attach, so now I will just need to go to the service dept, as you said. Thanks for the reply. |

It seems that there's more than one style of badge. I expected to find mine to have pins, found out when I pulled it that it did not. I would think yours doesn't, otherwise it should be impossible for it to be crooked.

It must have been installed during Octoberfest! Anyway, the dealer should have inspected the vehicle before putting it on the lot and definitely before delivery.
3M tape that size doesn't usually come loose and the 2 protruding locators would have kept it aligned with the 2 dimples on the bumper cover. The assembly final line has very bright lights with several human inspectors and cameras. This would have been caught on a KIA and certainly BMW. Last edited by GenXer; 09-04-2019 at 03:50 AM.. |

It was built before the start of Octoberfest but hey, I can see someone missing it. I did when i bought the car and I went around and around the car multiple times, as did my wife. It wasn't until I hand washed the car a week after purchase that I noticed it. |

It's also possible the roundel has shorter than usual locator pins that didn't seat properly on the two dimples. Last edited by GenXer; 09-04-2019 at 04:06 AM.. |

That is seriously off center, I agree someone must have had a bad day when they applied it. Definitely take it back to the dealership. I wouldn't be able to deal with that myself. You don't want to damage things changing it yourself.
