Never leased before---need help!!!

So I am in the market for a M5 Comp. I do not really need a 2020, so I am happy looking for a 2019 that is in stock for the best deal.

As the title states, I have never leased a car before, but my controller is telling me leasing is the way to go.

So, what are the important numbers to look at/negotiate when leasing a 2019 M5 Comp.

Thanks in advance for all the advice.

Tom

Much like buying a car you want to negotiate the biggest discount (versus MSRP)(10% is good, anything above that is very good IMO) possible as your starting point as this will greatly impact what you pay each month.

Also look at the Money Factor, essentially cost to rent / interest and try to get as close to the "Buy Rate" as possible. Residual Values will also impact payment ... this is set by BMW FS and not something that is subject to manipulation (this may vary between outgoing model years and possibly between a Base and Comp M5's).

Also educate yourself on incentives being offered; these are independent from the discount offered against MSRP (Point #1) but will also impact payment significantly and may sway you to a Base M5 versus a Competition M5. My M5 Comp's almost a year old so I've not been following this too closely but there were more incentives on the Base M5 versus the M5 Comp when I leased mine.

Lastly, consider the tax effect ... in Florida you'll pay tax monthly.

Be patient and shop dealers.

Hope this helps.

I need listed as follows:

-listed residual
-0 down

and ask them what incentives they have, although you can find that on this forum.

You might also ask for disclosure of ALL fees due at signing, as they often add "Document Fee", registration / license fee, or some imaginary fees to boost their bottom line. You don't want to be ready to sign and be surprised.

I find it more effective and efficient to tell them in the email where they need to be to get your deal, rather than asking them for best offer. Do your homework (which you are now), and set a target sale price where you'd sign. As others said, negotiate the discount off sticker without incentives - the incentives come from BMW and are same across all of them. This is somewhat personal, but I only deal with base (buy rate) money factor (MF). It's .00128 for Sept, but dealers are allowed to mark it up to .00168 - the spread is their profit.

Know your residual value for the program of the month (there's a separate thread that has them). This can't be altered or negotiated, and set by BMW Financial Services for about a month, then they can change it (for better or worse).

If your state allows, consider doing Multiple Security Deposits (MSD) - each one drops your MF by .00005. Typically it ends up being a nice ROI, and the money is protected against car theft/totaling.

Finally, contact as many dealers as possible, and consider out of state as well. That's the only practical way to find the best deal.

If you get offers and aren't certain if they're good, post here and people will help.

i've never had a dealer do that to me. if they surprised me with fees on the lease docs, it's getting tore up.

Some play these stupid games and unfortunately waste everyone's time. I can only surmise that it works enough times, however, to continue doing it.

The best way to avoid it is to be informed and detailed. Iron out everything to the penny before heading out to sign and ask the CA (if dealing with them) to ensure they've got agreement from GSM and finance, and they've double checked everything. Tell them upfront you're walking if anything changes. They'd be downright stupid to still pull shenanigans. The biggest risk is doing a remote deal - they can still "make a mistake" once you've arrived but now you've spent the $ and time to travel. Can do your best to try avoiding this, but no guarantees.

Thanks for all the valuable info! I am on one car with an Individual color I like, that is dealer stock, and they seem motivated to move. I will get the info suggested, and post it here to get the forum approval!

Thanks again for the posts and taking the time to help!

OK, just spoke to my dealer. Here is the deal:

MSRP $133,420
Discount Price $120,000
Price after rebate $117,500
He then called the Money Factor the Buy rate .000930
Residual is $73,380

They say zero down, but then want me to make 7 payments in advance to help reduce the rate.

Payment is $1541.00 monthly

That's a good (not great, but good) deal, just shy of 12% off sticker before incentive. The 7 MSD payments is normal - that's what took your MF down to .00093 (it would've been .00128 otherwise), and is indeed buy rate.

So zero down here presumably means they rolled all other fees, taxes, etc into the cap price - I'd ask them to itemize for due diligence.

Now, do you qualify for loyalty? If so, that's another $2000 credit this month. If you do qualify, then the discount above is less interesting because they presumably accounted for it.

Depending on how attached you are to this car, what I'd personally do on a high sticker 2019 in individual color (that's been sitting around for a while?) is tell them you'll take it right now at 15% off sticker (before incentives), but settle for 13-14%. They may not do it now (or not until closer to monthend), and may end up selling it to someone else, so it's a gamble you make. But, asking them for it doesn't preclude you from agreeing to the existing deal anyway.

Got them down a little lower. $1434 monthly.

I think I am going to pull the trigger. I love the individual color.

Tell them if they can do $1379 to $1399 a month, you'll pull the trigger .

That would be an amazing deal.

What's the discounted price before incentives here? So do you qualify for loyalty or no?

I agree with David - see if you can hit at least $1399, that'd be great. It sounds like they're set up to give you a great deal, so push a bit harder before letting off the gas.

So, the credit is $2500 plus another $2000 for this month?

According to this, there's $2k loyalty credit this month. Pretty sure it wasn't there in previous months (or was less).

Love it when the dealer calls first thing Monday morning telling me someone from the forum saw my deal and tried to get the car for himself. Classy...
