troubles with home charger

Our next door has been having trouble with her BP Chargemaster , she is currently on her 3rd in 4 years. the first blew out after 18 months and was replaced under guarantee. The second failed recently and was out of cover, she then found out that there is no maintenance scheme for the chargers and she had to source an electrician capable to tackling a repair . She managed in the end to find someone to take it on, after the repair he showed her the charge cable which had failed. He stripped back the outer insulation and the wire was failing generally the whole length and was breaking down with multiple insulation and wire faults.
His comment was that She was lucky it just failed completely and did not burn the house down.

Yeah internet research would indicate they only last 3-4 years :-( Was theirs a tethered unit?
