Who is renewing BMW's scam CarPlay Subscription.

My car turned one year old, so XM and CarPlay stopped working. Don't care about the XM but could use CarPlay just for Waze. Anyway, using bluetooth for audio and its all of a sudden really buggy, like navigating my playlists is super slow and sometimes, choosing a song plays something else randomly. I can't help think that BMW is doing this on purpose. I've used bluetooth before with no problems when I've had to turn off my wifi. I could live with just my Apple Music subscription but now even that's buggy to listen to.

Such a scam BMW, such a scam.

I haven't had this happen yet on my
F90, but on newly released x5m build sheet it says something about subscription, I thought it was a mistake.. that's ridiculous if they want annual fee or whatever.. I thought you buy CarPlay as feature like on previous models and it's there for life of the car.

Now that new iOS came out for iPhone interface changed on my CarPlay for the worse I think.. it seems middle screen is even smaller since you cannot blow it up fully on older idrive

I forgot about that, you have to pay yearly for CarPlay and BMW can't even engineer it to display full screen!

I called the BMW Connected ppl a few weeks ago about the CarPlay sub (although I’m nowhere near the one-year - I was just curious) and, if I remember correctly, $300 will get you a 20-year sub. I thought they were joking and asked again. I recently upgraded my XS Max to the 11 Pro Max w/iOS 13 and I’m not seeing any issues with CarPlay. I like it so, when it’s time to re-up, I plan to purchase.

I paid the 300 bucks when I bought my '18, so I'm good for 20 years.

Here is an article addressing the issue.

try buying a porsche if you want to get nickel and dimed for every single option. Then you'll have a $185k nickel and dimed car.

Its not the options, its the yearly subscription. Charging you for hardware you already bought.

Porsche charges $360 for the option of Apple Carplay. Call it an option or subscription, it is the same thing. The problem was BMW didn't offer a "lifetime" subscription at first when they went to this new model. Now they offer both. A yearly for those that lease and the 20 year one for those that keep their car for longer.

I think it should be standard too but let's be real. BMW isn't the only one to charge for something that should be included. The worst part are cheaper cars are the ones that include it with even basic models.

On my F85 I believe it was $300 option so Im sure it's for way longer than I plan to own the car, on F90 I never checked so I have to look at window sticker, although I'm curious for new 2020 models what's the deal and how much is it?

I bought carplay a while ago but if I remember correctly it isn't tied to the car but rather your account through BMW.

Yeah the $300 is tough for a car of this price, but considering it transfers with each BMW you get and that it is one of the few, if not only, car brands ,that I'm aware of, that allows for wireless carplay it is a big plus. I personally prefer the BMW navigation since I can send the address through the app and get the directions through my dash. Really only use waze when I know I need to void traffic.

I don't know why BMW does this to themselves.

Every other car manufacturer just builds this into the price of the vehicle, so you're paying for it, even if it's not a separate, costed line item.

You don't hear owners of those vehicles complaining they're getting "nickeled and dimed", nor do you hear many of them complaining about paying for functionality they aren't using (e.g. Android users, or the technologically-impaired people who don't connect their phone at all).

If they just raised the MSRP of the vehicle $500, they'd make more money, and people wouldn't whine about being "nickeled and dimed".

Begin Rant.

Wow a First World Problem....and how about all that plastic wrap people have paid for and the aftermarket plastic add on parts. Man such whining over $300. You get your new iPhone every year for $1000, but paying $300 for CarPlay is some kind of conspiracy. Rip up your tires and breaks at the track and spend $4000 replacing those and that's ok. Using CarPlay every time you drive is some kind of rip off? That article is excellent. Read it. BMW is the only car out there with wireless CarPlay, that alone is worth the $300.

End Rant

I don't have CarPlay. LOL. We have it in the Sienna, wired, it's Meh......

Its not the $80 a year, its the principle. If BMW finds this method successful, it'll just embolden them to start other subscription type markups. And what exactly are we paying for? They aren't serving any media, or anything other than access to hardware we already paid for.

And my bluetooth is still having issues after the trial subscription ended.

Did you upgrade to 13.1.3? Apple released it today and it specifically calls out bluetooth issues.

The “software gone yearly” is a relatively new way (several years now) doing business (and suck more $$$ from us) and it’s called “Software as a Service” business plan.

I personally hate it... But, I was in the IT Business for 38+ years and I’ve seen it coming a long time ago. That type of business model was/is great for medium to large businesses as it is good for maintenance. However, for the general consumer, it’s overkill (for the lack of a better description — ironically, my wife and I were discussing this subject last night).

In your case, just go with the $80/year for 2 years instead of the $300 for 20 years.

Agreed--it is a scam; penny-pinching MoFos.

Upgrade to IOS 13.1 to resolve Bluetooth sporadic disconnect issues.
