Flaps open on exhaust question
I have a 2018 540 and I want to know who has confirmed this to work on a 2018. I hear there are 3 ways to do it but it isn't always capable Which have you done and do they stay open all of the time.
1. Bimmerlink App 2. Remove fuse 3. Unplug cable |

Someone did a picture of the board in rear right of trunk panel. Try searching for it. I felt like bimmercode didn't seem to work 100% of the time. And BimmerLink only works if you have blue tooth on connected while driving in my experience. It's a single red fuse mid high alway to left of fuse panel. Red 7.5 fuse
Turn car off, use flashlight to confirm flap is open If flaps not then start car and cold start the flap is open and remove red 7.5 on far left Just pull it and put in safe place for holding

Yes
And use your flashlight on phone to look into the pipe to confirm flap is open

From what I know,
2018/2019 are same, changes 2020. Just see if your fuse box looks like the pic If you have a red 7.5 on the left pull it. Worst case you lose abs or a/c

It works. Mine is an 18'. Start it up, put it in sport + give it a rev and have someone pull fuse 205. Confirm flaps are open and you're all set!

That's it, use the little tool in middle of box.
I did mine when engine was off since the flaps were open already. Some people say do it while cold start is going but, if flaps open just pull it

Assuming the flap fuse is in same location in the 540 as it is in the 550. Pull out the folded paper fuse diagram tucked in the fuse panel and it will show the number of each fuse. Read this link for the fuse #, etc. I did it on my 2018 550 with no issues. Love my 2020 550 with the engine sound window in the menu. Just check the box on sporty and the flaps are open all the time, regardless of the drive mode! No need to pull any fuses. |

Like many here I just pulled the spring connector between the flap motor and the flap and wired it open. Simple and neat looking approach for me. Easy to do when it was up on my lift while the Z06 was in
use, but fairly easy access when on the ground, too. --Bob

What if someone revs the motor won't it open then? Or can it manually be pushed open with something?

I remember going through this when I looked for the flap fix when I still had the stock exhaust. Several posts kept on about pulling the fuse, but on my car the flap never stayed open when the car was off. It may be different on a 550i, but on my 540, the only way I could get the flap to open was to put the car into Sports mode, then give the engine a blip. The moment you come off the throttle though or you shut down the car, the flap closed.
I ended up pulling the clip out, which is easy. Word of warning though, the actuator motor will spin past the closed position when you next start the car because it doesn't have a clip to stop it. It means you wont' be able to easily put the clip back in because the flap and the slot of the shaft on the actuator are out of alignment. You can't manually force the actuator motor to spin either because it's a gear servo. I wanted to put the clip back in prior to getting my MPPSK fitted. Gosh darn the cursing I had to go though. Ended up pulling the plug on the actuator when it was half open - that allowed flap and actuator pin to line up again. Anyway.. my suggestion would be to pull the plug on the actuator. Pull it out completely first, then just hold it in far enough so the pins have connection but you don't actually engage the plug all the way (it's a firm clip on that connection, which isn't quickly pulled once it's on all the way). Get someone else to start the car, put it in sport and give it some throttle, as soon as the actuator spins open, pull the wire. |

No flap on the MPE. Sounds good when you give it a boot full. I love it. It could have even been a bit more throaty for my liking but it's a good balance. I believe if you put a downpipe on the car, it would sound bloody awesome but I can't get away with that here.
