F30 330 v G20 330e - fuel consumption comparison

I have now had my first full tank of petrol, and over last week I've been doing my typical journeys of 140 mile round trips to the office, and some weekend usage for the gym or shops.

Typically I would just about get to 380 miles range per tank in my previous F30 version, averaging 46mpg (brim to brim) this year. I am able to charge at home and in the office.

On first tank alone in the G20 one I got 481 miles from 46 litres (8.3 gallons), at around 58mpg (brim to brim). The miles driven on electric was shown as 170 miles, which means the petrol took me around 311 miles, which means he petrol engine is giving me around 37mpg. Reality is that there's often a blend of both, so that's an approximation of course, but I thought it was interesting to know.

My driving style is not one trying to eke out great fuel consumption, more one of making progress with good road manners, and the journey involves cross country, fast motorway, congested motorway, and urban congestion.

All in all I am very happy with the improvement. The pence per mile cost is already below 10 p per mile, compared to over 12p per mile for the old one, and given the business mileage rate is 18p per mile, this is healthy amount back in my pocket for every business mile driven, given I do about 1600 business miles a month. I'm sure the engine will loosen up too, and consumption will improve further.

Next week I will do Oxford to Perth, so will be interesting to see how it fares over that longer journey. I used to need to fill up en route with the old one, and expect this one will still need to do that.

When you have some more time with the G20, it would be interesting to hear your thoughts about this comparison regarding everything else, performance, handling, electric range, etc. between the two models.

Absolutely leagues ahead! On pretty much every level the G20 is a huge leap on from the F30. Driving dynamics, refinement, tech, driver assistance, and with the hybrid powertrain. Will try and write it up in detail over next few days.

And to think I "nearly" took an F30 330e that was left in the "spare car" pool, rather than waiting for the G20 to be available... ;-)

Oh that would have been a terrible decision!
