335i Transmission Fault
Hello,
So today Was driving around in my 2009 335i and ran into a transmission fault. and sadly i can recreate the fault, going to go out here shortly and try to get a video of it that I will post on youtube. So whilst in manual mode (auto trans) I was shifting through my gears usually at about 3k RPMs so not to heavily. and noticed upshifting from 3rd to 4th and the car would shift into 4th for a split second and jump back down to 3rd causing rpms to jump a little, and whilst on the gas it would continue to try to go into 4th but wouldnt. then up pops up the Transmission Malf. Code displayed on the nav screen. and the transmission would be locked in 3rd gear with no ability to shift up or down. would have to pull over shut the car off, take the key out and restart and would be fine until it happens again. I've tried the transmission adaptive reset with no success. Trans fluid looks fine, not low, not to full. Any suggestions would be nice, and will update the thread shortly with a video of the problem. Also did notice that a used 60k mile trans was only about 800$ so worse come to worse might give it a try if it is absolutely needed. After this video i was on my way back home and caught it doing it w/ Trans Malf. Display. |

At this point what i would do is these order of things.
- replace the valve body seals. (The potential cheap fix) - replace the valve body or re build it. With new solenoids. If these dont fix it. (Which i doubt they wont) Then ur looking at an issue with the clutches. Pull some codes i bet ull see something to do with clutch ratio. Doesnt necesarily mean a clutch issue. Codes are pulled with ista and bmw tools. And are not stored on dme. |

Yep.....do a fluid and filter change, and change the d-seal and 4 sleeve seals between the valve body and the transmission. It will most likely fix your issues.

Yep..those Re the right parts!! Not sure I would mess with the solenoids unless you are/we're having issues with it not wanting to shift.
From what I've read (and the issues I had with my 6AT)....the majority of the issues the ZF transmissions have are from those seals leaking. |

So this is an update to my thread, I reset the adaptations through inpa the other day now today driving the car it would rev up to high rpms once the transmission would go to switch gears, while accelerating.(kinda like it slipping before it changes gears) Also I hooked up to the mhd app and noticed I bought the car with a stage 2 tune loaded into it, which I already figured.

Also, did you ever change the D-seal and 4 sleeve seals under the valve body? Like most people have said...that's probably your whole issue.

Yeah....that's why I've read you really don't want to reset the adaptations unless you replace hard parts (clutches, bushings, etc). It can be hard to get it to relearn everything.
So have you replaced the D and sleeve seals?? |

Are you going to replace them since you will have the valve body off? They shrink with age and can leak...you might not be able to visually tell if they are leaking or not.

Just a few points to keep in mind.
When you are pulling the sleeves out be careful not to scratch the metal that surrounds the sleeve. Also be aware that you will drain a lot more oil once the mechatronic unit is dropped. Be ready to anticipate the weight of the mechatronic unit once unbolted. Last edited by Wolf 335; 12-10-2019 at 09:26 PM.. |

Not sure what you are showing that you found?
If it's the grey sludge, it is metalic shavings. Means magnets are doing their job. Replace seals, pan, and mechatronic o ring sleeve, and oil. Make sure you have means to monitor transmission temperature when filling fluid. It is important not to let it heat up past 40 deg Celsius. Last edited by Wolf 335; 12-10-2019 at 09:46 PM.. |

Try following suggestions posted above, if it doesn't help, most likely a clutch E issue ( Google 6hp clutch E), so either new to you trans or a rebuild. Given that the car was stage 2, has burnt oil, no surprise if that clutch E has been worn and/or it's bushing is worn
