Central display turns off (dark) after driving for...
10 or 15 minutes. Happened a few times now. Have any of you ever experienced this? Can’t imagine the service guys actually figuring this one out. May just have to live with it. Car is ‘19 540ixMsport.

Which central display? IDrive? IDrive has a turn off LCD option.

Hey, if you can reliably replicate the error, then BMW is obligated to fix it. They'll likely reload the software, and if that doesn't work, replace the iDrive system. It's under warranty, so why not try?

There are two specific spots on two different highways where it happens.... and doesn't happen anywhere else. BMW has yet to resolve it and it has been escalated to engineering as well as the top level service"experts" at BMW. No luck so far and don't expect much at this point.

I have had no luck in getting this fixed. They changed the "brain" and I still have the problem. Thinking about returning the car; it is a lease. To me this is damn dangerous as everything goes dark! |

You mean the iDrive goes dark, or everything as in instrument panel too?
I had a F06 that rebooted the iDrive frequently, very annoying, they tried to fix it and I sold the car before they tried a second time. My F87 had a constantly crashing navigation issue that took 4 service visits to resolve. They replace all of the iDrive components, finally, after getting BMW corporate involved. No problems since. I suspect that they have some supplier issues. To be fair, electronics in cars have a tough life, getting beat up constantly on bad roads, extreme temperature changes, etc., but for what we pay for these things, it seems that BMW should do better. I had an Audi with the same issue, constant infotainment system reboots. BTW, a service advisor told me that it may be an issue with my iPhone, as that's a known problem. Of course, I have a Samsung...

A long shot - do you have gesture control set up to switch off the screen with one of the commands?

Thanks for all the replies. I guess I wasn’t clear in my post. Only my idrive display goes dark. When this happens, a press of the idrive controller puts the display back on. So I guess it’s not such a dire problem. On the other hand it is an issue which should be addressed, if possible.

BTW, I just checked my gesture control settings and, as suggested above, it had the two-finger gesture set to turn off the idrive display!! So that might be it. Thanks, and we’ll see.

Well, I can tell you from personal experience that you need to give the dealer every chance to fix it before you can start trying to get BMW to take it back.
Who knows, they may surprise you and get it right the first time. It's best if you can find a scenario that exists such that you can replicate the problem for them.

Mine DINGs when it goes dark and so I've noticed that it happens quite frequently when I'm changing radio stations. It doesn't detect the hand motion (there is none) just the two fingers.

Two finger point is probably the only consistent gesture control I use, I mute the radio with it

Don't have gesture control, so no issues with IDrive screen shutting off, etc.
