trade in now or wait for lci

Hi all,

I have a Jan 17 520d msport with pretty much all options ticked. BMW are giving me good trade in now on a new 5 but I’m not pushed. Just wondering better hanging on to see what LCI is like? Seems like not major updates over current model..

Sounds like you have a great car in good shape. Why take the depreciation hit?

I'm surprised to hear you say you are getting a good trade in. Resale on the five series is borderline horrible. I regret not leasing mine.

I was going to wait until July 2020 and order a 2021 LCI. However, I couldn't pass up the deal I got on a new 2020 (23% off MSRP). I figured the best I would do on the new LCI would be about 12% off. Considering how fast these cars depreciate, I took the better deal.

I need a vehicle that holds its value better. I just don’t keep cars that long. I’m considering a few things.

Buy a cheaper car, such as a G70 Genesis. Resale value as a percentage won’t be any better, could be worse. But resale value as dollars is better and they can be bought at big discounts and the actual money outlay is a lot less.

Buy an SUV, such as an X5. Resale appears to me to be as much as $10,000 better for a vehicle bought at a comparable price as a 5 series. Still doing homework on that idea.

Buy used...specifically CPO. I’ve been watching cars.com for a 7 series because it’s first and second year resale are so bad. Three days ago I found one at a dealer 45 miles from where I live. It was the perfect car at a very good price. It. Was gone later the same day I saw it listed.

Lease. As I said, I wish I leased my 540. I have leased many cars, and did get a lease quote when I bought it. It looks like I would have saved $4-5,000 leasing for three years versus buying and trading at three years.

15K+ maybe if private party selling. Trade in value will be closer to 10K.

The bigger issue is driving a modern bmw for 3 years with no warranty. Ticking time bomb.

Question , if not leasing why do you need to change?
Why not keep it longer?
The depreciation will slow down to somewhat although you do have to factor in either buying or extending a warranty and possibly some unexpected bills. A gamble obviously.

I've bought my BMW's and kept them over 5 and 10 years respectively. Had my g30 for getting on for 3 years and plan to keep that most likely for another 3-4 and self insure.

Just a thought.

Let me repeat this.....I don’t keep cars that long. I just don’t. I’m not exaggerating when I tell you that everyday I think about what to get next. It’s just how I’m wired and have been for over 50 years.
