330i exhaust flap mod

Hi all,

I have seen this thread in the m340i section, just wondering if anyone has done this for their 330i?

Cheers

I think a few people have done it. I haven't done it yet because I don't know how to remove the connector. I wonder if there's a lock preventing me from doing it. I can't find any proper pics of the connector to see where the lock is.

I just did it and it was quite simple, the connector has a small button like thing you push and then wiggle the connector off.

It is actually very simple. One of the first "mods" I did when I got my car. All you have to do is go down to the lower right tip of the exhaust. Look at the black wire that's connecting to the exhaust. Turn the car on and make sure it's in sport. Pull on the black wire and click on the tab on the black connector connecting the wire to the exhaust. Turn the car off and turn it back on. And there it should be ready! A lot of louder cold starts.

Is the button like thing on the top or the side of the connector?

On the right side of the connector, the wider bit that is facing toward the tire.

Can someone explain how the valve works?

I can audibly hear the valve pop open and close switching between sport/comfort while in park, but as soon as I put it in drive, I can clearly hear the valve close. Does it only open when necessary, such as full throttle? The car is warmed up and idles below 1k.

Does locking the valve open by disconnecting the connection make it louder at lower RPMs? Any videos before/after?

No, the exhaust valve is always open when the car is in sport. I believe that when it is disconnected and always open, comfort is a little louder and cold starts are louder, too.

Correct, it doesn't open immediately in sport mode though, takes about 20 seconds or so.

But I can switch back and forth while in park and hear it open/shut. I hear the valve shutting when I put it in drive.

I did this the other day... warmed up the car a little (the valve won't open immediately from a cold start) leave the car running then change to sport in idle, disconnect the plug. That's it.
Now you can turn the car off and you can physically see the valve still open on the RH exhaust. (330i)
I then covered the plug & port with a finger end of a black latex glove and insulation tape.
Zip tied the plug/lead to the side of the port on exhaust hanger.
Very simple to do.

It's louder on both cold start and when running in Comfort, but without so much of the burbles of Sport/Sport + (I expect that's down to throttle/Fuelling mapped for this mode)

I'll try and get a photo and video later if possible and post back.

Would be cool to see if anyone makes caps or dummies for these connectors that include a weather sealing gasket. I don't think electrical/insulation tape is gonna hold up in the winter lol.

Agreed. It works for now, but I don't see it as being a great long term solution!

In Eco / Comf mode, I think they´re always closed (or open on demand, i.e harder acceleration). When in Sport/Sport+ mode, it stays open on P, R and N, but closes automatically as soon as you put it in D, and works on its own. This may happen because of low RPM drones.

I´ve done the "mod" to my car and it´s noticeably louder in low RPMs (sounds the same in higher RPMs, because the valve would open anyways) and with the sound system Muted you might hear the exhaust drone a bit. Nothing that will bother you tho, as it didn´t bother me. Will try to upload some videos of it, but in the 330i it´s very hard to notice a difference on camera. Unplug it and have fun!

I can't seem to get mine to open at all, I've been for a hoon in Sport (xtraboost) and pulled up to unplug the connector to see the valve was closed.

Tried leaving the engine on for 5 or so mins in sport with no luck either?

Odd?? When you switch from 'comfort' to 'sport/ Sport +' you should hear an audible creak (for want of a better word) as the flap opens?

Does the gear lever have to be in M/S?

As soon as I open the door the gear lever automatically resets back to the right.

Will check the connection to see if the plug is mated fully
