New M135i not so bad

Why is everyone so against the new 135i, yes its no looker but after a test drive I was well impressed. Don't judge a book by its cover is all I can say.
My brother has the M140i and even he was impressed.

New car life. The world is always ready to take a shot at BMW. About 6-12 months into the release cycle and the new cars look familiar, a few mods are out, everyone starts to know their 'favourite' spec and I suppose sadly the prior models start looking dated.

Then roll on an LCI and it's a no contest landslide.

+1 for the new F40 very accomplished car.

There is antipathy, generally, towards the F4x BMWs because of their FWD focus. BMW long championed RWD as the "proper" driveline layout for "ultimate driving machines"; indeed, I think it used to ridicule some FWD brands as pretenders to any performance claims. This spawned many, many BMW enthusiasts (many on this site) who mimic that opinion without any personal experience.

IMO, if you like the car and it performs as you expect, just take any criticism from these quarters on the chin, and enjoy your drive 👍

Good question.. I'm an early adopter. From my experience New BMWs take a while to like look wise. It's a bit general to say the least and coupled with a FWD set up it's created a target for the enthusiasts to hit at.

I have been a massive RWD fan for years.. had an RB 25 modified, v35 modified and then later on a F30 320d (because we can't get the 330d here) and I have to say I was looking at buying the x3 m40i but after a test drive.. I was hooked!

Drive one peeps and make your own judgement 👍

I'm about to get this as my first BMW, so I don't have the baggage of the comparison to the old one. However, the interior is a step up from the older models. I've been in a friends M2 and prefer the newer 1 series interior.

Only had it for a week doing around 400 ‘running in’ miles and in my opinion it is a really well rounded car and very capable. The cornering ability compared to my previous F20 M135 is on another level and mine is on Bridgestone rubber so looking forward to getting it onto Michelin at some point.

Personally quite happy with the looks of the car and don’t really see what everyone’s issue is with it. It’s been demonstrated already that a few smallish mods can have a decent impact if needed.

Tech / interior quality is unquestionably great.

Shopping Trip Disclaimer.

Just been out for a little blast to get supplies for the inlaws. Car is loosening up nicely. Remus exhaust is definitely a deeper tone and it does have a huge amount of physical cornering grip. Maybe helped the sun is shining today.

Really enjoy 20 minutes on the car there.

I love the feeling of driving your daily for the first time in a week or two when back from holidays. Feels like a different car!

Sunshine and some decent temp into your Michelin’s is going to help!

Thinking the first day out of lockdown I will be making the trip over the border to the Brecons if this weather is still around! Obviously after making sure to see the family etc etc

Taking the family bus to do the weekly shopping for my one trip out at the moment! Tax taken off the M135i and declared SORN in the garage.

Just to share my thoughts on the F40 M135i, from the launch, my comments to my friends working at the local BMW dealership was ugly front, what's up with the 4 banger and FWD focused X Drive platform and a few other complaints.

I have got a F90 Comp for family outings and the F20 118i for daily runabout work purposes. Told myself thank God, I have the last of the RWD F20. Recently got sick of the weak 1.5l 3 banger and started shopping for a "not too expensive" but with decent go daily. Tried out the F40 M135i, under hard acceleration, you can feel the car is FWD focused despite having X Drive but push it round bends and the chassis shines and the low and mid range of the mighty 2L 4 banger really shoves you in your seat!

During the day of the demo drive, it was raining rather heavily and yet the car cornered like it was on rails and gave you the confidence to push it hard. Its only when you are pushing the car hard on the straights do you feel the lack of displacement. The pull on high rpms seems to be lacking in torque and lacks the shove in the low to mid rpm range of this engine. The B58 shines in the high rpm pull seemingly endless in its power delivery.

Conclusion, the F40 M135i is a mighty hot hatch, even being used to the power of the F90 Comp, I came away impressed with the F40 M135i. I might be getting one soon, depending on the price negotiation I can squeeze out if I take the deal. For those that haven driven the car, do it a demo drive, I believe you will be impressed.

Good to hear thanks.

I think I see you're in Singapore, I bet an F90 costs a pretty penny there!

Yeah the M135i a pretty good car, got to give credit when it's due.

Yes I'm in Singapore, the F90 Comp here costs quite a few pennies more lol

Like you said, I actually think the m135i really shines in the wet. On the straights sometimes i can feel the pull decreasing with rpms. ( it's actually better if you shift at 6k rpms ) When I switch on the RC tuning box on map 5 or higher, the car feesl perfect to me it pulls better where power would have been dying out.

Nicely nodded M135i! Mine in the same color! Will share pics when taking delivery. Mine has some M performance parts installed by dealer.

Delivery date scheduled on 8th Aug 2020. Too many cars in PDI, so gotta wait patiently.... 3 weeks and 2 days more to go.....

I test drove one and really liked it. I couldn't persuade my wife to live with the bucket seats so she opted for the other petrol engine - 118i

Lovely car though and plenty of engine for normal use. The only thing I don't like with the 118i is the start/stop is very clunky but easily turned off.

i was quite skeptical after all the negative press and videos, but i always prefer to make up my own mind. i test drove the M135i and ordered it the next day. Mostly impressed by the performance and the interior is gorgeous..best in class imo. Not a big fan of the synthetic sound through the speakers, nor the engine sound - but those are not deal breakers for me.

😂 I pretty much did the same, took a test drive and ordered one when I came back.

Think people just aren't used to it or haven't seen them in the flesh. The new M135s are stunning and amazing to drive, I personally have an M235 (not a fan favourite) but I can't get enough of it, don't think I ever will 🤷*♂️

My delivery has been moved forward to 4th Aug. Couple more days to collection. Might be abit tied up that day, might get the salesman to deliver to my home instead.
