Vinyl overlay? Probably difficult to freehand...

Looking for direction before I remove them...can they be reinstalled without additional adhesive?

There are lots of vinyl overlays available online. There's even a website called vinylmod.com that sells overlays for the roundel.

I was specifically talking about a chrome delete for the ring that goes around the emblem- is that available there? To me it looks like the vinyl overlays are for the center

Will attempt to remove the roundels sometime this weekend in order to "delete" the chrome as shown in the IND roundels. My plan is to tape off the center, sand the chrome with 400 grit sand paper, 2-3 coats Rustoleum spray primer, 2-3 coats Rustoluem gloss black, 2-3 coats Rustoleum enamel gloss clear. I will update with pictures, wish me luck!

Good luck..... there are plenty of YouTube videos on how to remove the rounders if you need them.

Let us know the outcome...I'm curious if the time investment will be worth it in the end, but I know you're only painting an area of a few inches so it might be super easy. Good luck.

Finally got around to this project!


As I was blocking off the roundels with painters tape, I had a hard time adapting to my satisfaction to prevent overspray. I decided that I would use leftover vinyl instead of tape. However, while applying the vinyl, I realized I could adapt it pretty well with my heat gun and decided to wrap them for the time being.


I would say up close the emblem is 6/10, but from a distance, I would say it is 8/10 and a massive improvement. In person the line color difference and the margin is less noticeable. Only concern is whether not it will stand the test of time.

Thoughts?

That was my guess too. Not sure if my hands are steady enough to not cause scratches on the roundel while cutting though

It's not that hard actually. You can use an exacto knife and you can use the rim of the roundel as a guide. Just use a sharp blade and you don't even have to put much pressure.

They both came out pretty decent on the first try- the harder part is to get the vinyl to lay flat with the heat gun. Overall took less than an hour. A lot cheaper for me because I had everything lying around after wrapping my chrome window surounds

My recommendation is to use 3M Vinyl, it is pretty forgiving.

Note, this vinyl does has a protective film that should remain on during application but will be removed at the end.

If you order 5 feet by 1 foot would have more than enough for a few redos.

Remove the roundels as shown in the IND video. For the rear emblem, there is an adhesive, I recommend using a hair dryer of a head gun to apply some heat so that it comes off easily. Full disclosure, I was not aware of the adhesive and took it off just fine without heat- just a little adhesive came off the roundel backing, no real issue.

1.) Prep well with isopropyl alcohol or any paint prep (I used CarPro Eraser).
2.) Use generous piece of vinyl, maybe 6 inches by 6 inches.
3.) Apply vinyl to front of emblem, pay special care to the edges to prevent any air bubbles.
4.) Use heat (hair dryer or heat gun) as you stretch vinyl around the emblem. Try to get adherence past the rim so that you will have a little extra to prevent any bubbling.
5.) I recommend doing about 1/2 of emblem prior to trimming excess on the back of the emblem. This will facilitate good adherence without the excess impeding good adaptation. You can trim easily following the rim.
6.) Use your head gun and a credit card and/or finger to ensure good bond to emblem.
7.) Trim vinyl on front of emblem using fresh blade. Light pressure and follow rim.
8.) If you used the film linked above, it has a protective film that will need to be removed.
9.) Replace the emblems on your car and sit back and admire your work!

Appreciate the insight mtossb01, I was searching for vvivid vinyl but I guess I’ll stick to 3M
